- ItemConditions of pure arbitrage applications: Evidence from three currencies(Addleton Academic Publishers, 2016) Chen J; Bin L; Zhao PThis study analyzes the pure arbitrage conditions across three of the “Anglo-Saxon capitalism” currencies: Australian dollar, British pound, and US dollar. We examine the relationship between spot-forward exchange rates and domesticforeign interest rates in financial markets. We find that the most important determinants that contribute to the occurrence of pure arbitrage conditions are domestic spot currency rate and domestic interest rate. Daily data is collected from the DataStream/Thomson Reuters database and analyzed in probit regression models. The predicting accuracy check is conducted through in-sample and out-of-sample tests. Our results indicate that the level of significance for factor coefficients and prediction accuracy decrease with the time lag: the longer the time lag, the lower the prediction power.
- ItemCrawfish shell- and Chinese banyan branch-derived biochars reduced phytoavailability of As and Pb and altered community composition of bacteria in a contaminated arable soil.(20/03/2023) Gu S; Yang X; Chen H; Jeyakumar P; Chen J; Wang HGlobally, soil contamination with arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) has become a severe environmental issue. Herein, a pot experiment was conducted using pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) to investigate the effects of biochars derived from crawfish (Procambarus clarkia) shells (CSB) and Chinese banyan (Ficus microcarpa) branches (CBB) on the phytoavailability of As and Pb, and bacterial community composition in soils. Our results showed that the application of CSB and CBB decreased the concentrations of DTPA-extractable Pb in soils ranging from 26.8 % to 28.8 %, whereas CSB increased the concentration of NH4H2PO4-extractable As in soils, compared to the control. Application of both biochars reduced the uptake of As and Pb in the edible part of pak choi. In addition, application of CBB significantly (P < 0.05) increased the activities of α-glucosidase, β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, and acid phosphomonoesterase by 55.0 %, 54.4 %, 195.1 %, and 76.7 %, respectively, compared to the control. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the predominant bacteria at the phyla level in both biochar-treated soils were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteriota. Redundancy and correlation analyses showed that the changes in bacterial community composition could be related to soil organic carbon content, As availability, and nutrient availability in soils. Overall, the Chinese banyan branch biochar was more suitable than the crawfish shell biochar as a potential amendment for the remediation of soils co-contaminated with As and Pb.
- ItemDecoupling of nutrient stoichiometry in Suaeda glauca (Bunge) senesced leaves under salt treatment(Frontiers Media S.A., 2023-09-04) Yang F; Liu S; Qian M; Wang D; Chen J; Li WThe stoichiometry of senesced leaves is pivotal in nutrient cycling and can be significantly influenced by soil salinization, a rising global issue threatening the functionality of ecosystems. However, the impacts of soil salinization on senesced leaf stoichiometry are not fully understood. In this study, we conducted a pot experiment with varying soil salt concentrations to examine their influence on the concentrations and stoichiometric ratios of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) in the senesced leaves of Suaeda glauca (Bunge). Compared to the control group, salt treatments significantly enhanced Na concentration while diminishing the concentrations of K, Ca, Mg, Zn, N, and P. Interestingly, as salinity levels escalated, N concentration maintained stability, whereas P concentration exhibited an increasing trend. Moreover, K, Ca, and Mg significantly declined as salt levels rose. Salt treatments brought about significant changes in stoichiometric ratios, with the N:P, K:Na, N:Na, N:Mg, and Ca : Mg ratios dropping and the N:Ca and N:K ratios rising, illustrating the varying nutrient coupling cycles under different salt conditions. These findings shed light on the plasticity of stoichiometric traits in S. glauca senesced leaves in response to soil salinization shifts, which could potentially offer insights into nutrient cycling reactions to soil salinization.
- ItemEffects of microwave processing in comparison to sous vide cooking on meat quality, protein structural changes, and in vitro digestibility(Elsevier Ltd, 2024-02-15) Gawat M; Boland M; Chen J; Singh J; Kaur LThis study investigated the effect of industrial microwave (MW) processing, and sous vide (SV) on goat and lamb biceps femoris, where samples were cooked to the same tenderness. The cooked meat quality and ultrastructure were analyzed along with determining the protein surface hydrophobicity, particle size distribution, secondary structure, and protein digestibility. MW-processing resulted in higher cooking loss and more ultrastructural damage than SV and also induced higher myofibrillar protein surface hydrophobicity. Both processes caused a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the β-sheet and an increase in the random coils with a reduction (p < 0.05) in α-helix and β-turns. Both processes led to different protein hydrolysis patterns (observed through SDS-PAGE), but overall free amino N release after digestion was not significantly different among them. The results suggest that MW and SV modify meat protein structure differently, but with the same meat tenderness level, these processes can lead to similar overall protein digestibility.
- ItemHow structural and symbolic violence during resettlement impacts the social and mental wellbeing of forced migrant women: the lived experiences of Arabic speaking survivors of IPV resettled in Melbourne, Australia.(11/11/2022) Hourani J; Jarallah Y; Block K; Murray L; Chen J; Hach M; Vaughan CForced migrant women experience high levels of violence across their journeys and violence can be characterised as having three overarching forms: structural, symbolic, and interpersonal. It is important to understand the intersecting nature of gendered forms of symbolic, structural and interpersonal violence, and their impact on the mental health of forced migrant women in order to develop holistic IPV and resettlement programs and interventions. This article adopts an ecological framework of violence and qualitative methods with mental health service providers and survivors of IPV to understand the intersections of different forms of violence and their impact on mental health as they relate to the lived experiences of Arabic-speaking forced migrant survivors currently residing in Melbourne, Australia. Our research has three key findings: (1) that forced migrant women living in Melbourne, Australia experience intersecting forms of violence during resettlement (2) Structural and symbolic violence against forced migrant women persists regardless of marital status (3) Autonomy and independence plays a vital role in the mental health and wellbeing of forced migrant women. Our findings reveal that structural and symbolic violence increase the risk of IPV for forced migrant women during resettlement and that even when forced migrant women leave IPV situations, structural and symbolic violence persist and exacerbate mental ill-health. This article also reveals the importance autonomy and independence in both the perpetration of violence and in healing and recovery.
- ItemInfluences of nitrogen input forms and levels on phosphorus availability in karst grassland soils(Frontiers Media S.A., 2024-01-18) Zhou J; Yang F; Zhao X; Gu X; Chen C; Chen JThe availability of soil phosphorus (P), a crucial nutrient influencing plant productivity and ecosystem function, is impacted by continuously increasing nitrogen (N) enrichment, which changes the soil P cycle. The effect of varying forms of N input on soil P dynamics in P-limited karst grassland ecosystems remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a greenhouse experiment to explore the effects of various forms of N addition [Ca(NO3)2, NH4Cl, NH4NO3, Urea] on soil P fractions in these ecosystems, applying two levels (N1: 50 mg N kg−1soil, N2: 100 mg N kg−1soil) of N input in two soils (yellow soil, limestone soil). Results indicated that P fractions in both soil types were significantly affected by N additions, with yellow soil demonstrating a higher sensitivity to these additions, and this effect was strongly modulated by the form and level of N added. High N addition, rather than low N, significantly affect the P fractions in both soil types. Specially, except for Ca(NO3)2, high N addition significantly increased the available P in both soils, following the order: Urea and NH4NO3 > NH4Cl > Ca(NO3)2, and decreased NaHCO3-Pi in both soils. High N addition also significantly reduced NaOH-Po and C.HCl-Po fractions in yellow soil. Additionally, the response of root biomass and alkaline phosphatase activity in both soils to N input paralleled the trends observed in the available P fractions. Notably, changes in soil available P were strongly correlated with plant root biomass and soil alkaline phosphatase activity. Our study highlights that the N addition form significantly influences soil P availability, which is closely tied to plant root biomass and alkaline phosphatase activity. This finding underscores the importance of considering N input form to boost soil fertility and promote sustainable agriculture.
- ItemReproductive coercion as a form of family violence against immigrant and refugee women in Australia(PLOS, 2022-11-03) Suha M; Murray L; Warr D; Chen J; Block K; Murdolo A; Quiazon R; Davis E; Vaughan C; Salinas-Miranda AReproductive coercion (RC), generally considered a form of intimate partner violence (IPV), refers to perpetrator behaviours and actions that are intended to interfere with and control the autonomous decision-making of a person regarding their reproductive health. To date there are few studies that document RC as experienced by immigrant and refugee women. In this article, we explore cases of RC as described by women who were part of a larger qualitative study investigating violence against immigrant and refugee women in southern Australia. The study aimed to identify the types of RC detailed in immigrant and refugee women's narratives, and to illustrate the contexts in which these experiences occurred. Analysis followed Baxter and Jack's (2008) case study methodology; whereby particular "cases" are used to describe a phenomenon in context. Thirteen women from seven countries described experiences that fit definitions of RC. The cases describe various types of RC including violence during pregnancy with the intent of causing miscarriage, forced abortion, contraception sabotage and forced pregnancy. As well as intimate partners, some women described multiple perpetrators being complicit in their experience of RC, especially in regard to controlling women's access to, and interactions with health services. More information is needed about immigrant and refugee women's experiences of RC, and how vulnerability to multi-perpetrator violence affects health service access. In particular knowledge about how multi-perpetrator RC can affect consent processes for women who already face barriers to health care requires attention. Further research is required to address knowledge gaps about appropriate prevention and advocacy work about RC in refugee and migrant communities, and what training is needed for professionals in the family violence sector, women's health services, women's organisations, multicultural and ethno-specific services.
- ItemSurvival disparities in indigenous and non-indigenous New Zealanders with colon cancer: The role of patient comorbidity, treatment and health service factors(BMJ Publishing Group Ltd, 2010) Hill S; Sarfati D; Blakely T; Robson B; Purdie G; Chen J; Dennett E; Cormack D; Cunningham R; Dew K; McCreanor T; Kawachi IBackground Ethnic disparities in cancer survival have been documented in many populations and cancer types. The causes of these inequalities are not well understood but may include disease and patient characteristics, treatment differences and health service factors. Survival was compared in a cohort of Maori (Indigenous) and non-Maori New Zealanders with colon cancer, and the contribution of demographics, disease characteristics, patient comorbidity, treatment and healthcare factors to survival disparities was assessed. Methods Maori patients diagnosed as having colon cancer between 1996 and 2003 were identified from the New Zealand Cancer Registry and compared with a randomly selected sample of non-Maori patients. Clinical and outcome data were obtained from medical records, pathology reports and the national mortality database. Cancer-specific survival was examined using KaplanMeier survival curves and Cox hazards modelling with multivariable adjustment. Results 301 Maori and 328 non-Maori patients with colon cancer were compared. Maori had a significantly poorer cancer survival than non-Maori (hazard ratio (HR)=1.33, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.71) that was not explained by demographic or disease characteristics. The most important factors contributing to poorer survival in Maori were patient comorbidity and markers of healthcare access, each of which accounted for around a third of the survival disparity. The final model accounted for almost all the survival disparity between Maori and non-Maori patients (HR=1.07, 95% CI 0.77 to 1.47).

Weinberg M; CMS CollaborationCharged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions in proton-proton collisions at square root of s = 7 TeV are measured with the inner tracking system of the CMS detector at the LHC. The charged-hadron yield is obtained by counting the number of reconstructed hits, hit pairs, and fully reconstructed charged-particle tracks. The combination of the three methods gives a charged-particle multiplicity per unit of pseudorapidity dN(ch)/dη|(|η|<0.5) = 5.78 ± 0.01(stat) ± 0.23(syst) for non-single-diffractive events, higher than predicted by commonly used models. The relative increase in charged-particle multiplicity from square root of s = 0.9 to 7 TeV is [66.1 ± 1.0(stat) ± 4.2(syst)]%. The mean transverse momentum is measured to be 0.545 ± 0.005(stat) ± 0.015(syst) GeV/c. The results are compared with similar measurements at lower energies.
- ItemWorking with interpreters in the family violence sector in Australia: “It's very hard to be in between”(Elsevier B.V., 2023-08-14) Sullivan C; Block K; Murray L; Warr D; Chen J; Davis E; Murdolo A; Vaughan CThis study explores the role of interpreters and experiences of interpreting within family violence service provision in Australia. Data were drawn from the ASPIRE Project, a community-based participatory research project involving in-depth interviews with service providers (n = 57) and refugee and migrant women who had experienced family violence (n = 46), and a focus group discussion with interpreters (n = 4). The findings show that interpreting services are often inadequate and can create additional safety risks through breaches of confidentiality and other practices that undermine women experiencing family violence. Interpreters themselves are insufficiently supported to undertake the complex and sometimes traumatising task of working in family violence service provision. Cultural conceptions around gender that arise in family violence situations can complicate interpreted interactions, with each party to the triad bringing their own intersectional experiences. Expectations of the role of the interpreter in this context are at times expanded to the role of cultural and institutional broker by service providers. In contrast, migrant and refugee women interviewed prioritised a model based on directly interpreted interactions embedded in the norm of impartiality to promote trust in this high-risk practice area.
