- ItemAerospace competition, investor attention, and stock return comovement(Elsevier, 2023-09-14) Do X; Nguyen NH; Nguyen QMP; Truong CFierce aerospace competition among global superpowers has resulted in strong public attention on satellite launch events in the U.S. Given limited attentional resources, U.S. investors pay more attention to market-level shocks than to firm-specific shocks, making stock returns comove more with the market on satellite launch days than on other days. We find that the effect is significantly stronger for military-related satellite launches, launches before the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, and international satellite launches by other competitors, highlighting a greater concern for national security. A trading strategy that exploits the potential satellite-induced mispricing yields an annualized abnormal risk-adjusted return of up to 17% within the three-day window around launch date. Our results are robust to a battery of robustness analyses that consider the different characteristics of satellite launches, the exclusion of aerospace firms, and stock return comovement with industries.
- ItemRisk Analysis of Pension Fund Investment Choices(John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 2023-09-01) Bissoondoyal‐Bheenick E; Brooks R; Do XWe provide a comprehensive and more consistent approach to analyse and compare the risk-return relationships of Australian superannuation investment options for the period January 1990 to December 2016. In estimating the risk profiles of the investment options, we allow for the movement of the asset classes over time by employing a varying coefficient panel estimation technique. We find that while risk increases across different investment options from moderate to aggressive options, using different percentages of identifying a balanced fund does not impact the long-term risk measurement. We equally find that the risk-return relationships of investment options are not sensitive to the modelling framework, except for the crisis analysis, in which the Fama-French five-factor model provides greater sensitivity.
- ItemThe decomposition of tourism demand and tourism receipts(SAGE Publications, 2023-09-19) Balli F; Do X; Uqaili HWe examine the effect of the decomposition of tourist demand on tourism receipts. We find that tourists from OECD economies or from countries that have strong trade connections with the host economy tend to spend more money in emerging economies. However, tourists from countries that have sociocultural or geographic linkages, such as sharing the same border, having the same religion or language, or have the same ethnicity as those in the host country, tend to spend less money.
