    An in-depth survey on Deep Learning-based Motor Imagery Electroencephalogram (EEG) classification

    Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs) build a communication path between human brain and external devices. Among EEG-based BCI paradigms, the most commonly used one is motor imagery (MI). As a hot research topic, MI EEG-based BCI has largely contributed to medical fields and smart home industry. However, because of the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the non-stationary characteristic of EEG data, it is difficult to correctly classify different types of MI-EEG signals. Recently, the advances in Deep Learning (DL) significantly facilitate the development of MI EEG-based BCIs. In this paper, we provide a systematic survey of DL-based MI-EEG classification methods. Specifically, we first comprehensively discuss several important aspects of DL-based MI-EEG classification, covering input formulations, network architectures, public datasets, etc. Then, we summarize problems in model performance comparison and give guidelines to future studies for fair performance comparison. Next, we fairly evaluate the representative DL-based models using source code released by the authors and meticulously analyse the evaluation results. By performing ablation study on the network architecture, we found that (1) effective feature fusion is indispensable for multi-stream CNN-based models. (2) LSTM should be combined with spatial feature extraction techniques to obtain good classification performance. (3) the use of dropout contributes little to improving the model performance, and that (4) adding fully connected layers to the models significantly increases their parameters but it might not improve their performance. Finally, we raise several open issues in MI-EEG classification and provide possible future research directions.

    Decanoyl-Arg-Val-Lys-Arg-Chloromethylketone: An Antiviral Compound That Acts against Flaviviruses through the Inhibition of Furin-Mediated prM Cleavage

    Flaviviruses, such as Zika virus (ZIKV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), Dengue virus (DENV), and West Nile virus (WNV), are important arthropod-borne pathogens that present an immense global health problem. Their unpredictable disease severity, unusual clinical features, and severe neurological manifestations underscore an urgent need for antiviral interventions. Furin, a host proprotein convertase, is a key contender in processing flavivirus prM protein to M protein, turning the inert virus to an infectious particle. For this reason, the current study was planned to evaluate the antiviral activity of decanoyl-Arg-Val-Lys-Arg-chloromethylketone, a specific furin inhibitor, against flaviviruses, including ZIKV and JEV. Analysis of viral proteins revealed a significant increase in the prM/E index of ZIKV or JEV in dec-RVKR-cmk-treated Vero cells compared to DMSO-treated control cells, indicating dec-RVKR-cmk inhibits prM cleavage. Plaque assay, qRT-PCR, and immunofluorescence assay revealed a strong antiviral activity of dec-RVKR-cmk against ZIKV and JEV in terms of the reduction in virus progeny titer and in viral RNA and protein production in both mammalian cells and mosquito cells. Time-of-drug addition assay revealed that the maximum reduction of virus titer was observed in post-infection treatment. Furthermore, our results showed that dec-RVKR-cmk exerts its inhibitory action on the virus release and next round infectivity but not on viral RNA replication. Taken together, our study highlights an interesting antiviral activity of dec-RVKR-cmk against flaviviruses.

    Dynamic In Vitro Gastric Digestion Behaviour of Commercial Infant Formulae Made with Cow, Goat and Sheep Milk

    There are a wide range of commercial infant formulae available on the market. These are made using milk from different species, such as goat, sheep, and cow. The different protein compositions of these milks and the process used during infant-formulae manufacture, such as heat treatment, may impact the digestion of nutrients. This study compared the effect of protein composition and heat treatment on the in vitro gastric digestion behaviour of commercial infant formulae made with cow, goat, and sheep milk using a dynamic infant human gastric simulator (IHGS). During the simulated dynamic gastric digestion, the goat milk infant formula (GIF) showed earlier signs of aggregate formation compared to cow milk infant formula (CIF) and sheep milk infant formula (SIF). In addition, the microstructures of GIF chyme showed fragmented and porous structures. On the contrary, CIF formed dense protein networks that trapped oil droplets, whereas SIF exhibited a microstructure of smooth oil droplets surrounded by fewer protein networks. The different aggregation behaviours and aggregate structures of the three infant-formulae chyme were related to their different protein compositions, especially the different casein compositions. Furthermore, the open fragile structure of GIF aggregates provided easier access to pepsin, allowing it to hydrolyse protein. The results from the present study provided some information to assist in understanding the coagulation and digestion behaviours of commercial infant formulae made from different species of milk.

    Effect of iron-manganese oxide on the degradation of deoxynivalenol in feed and enhancement of growth performance and intestinal health in weaned piglets.

    Deoxynivalenol (DON), a prevalent and highly toxic mycotoxin in animal feed, poses significant risks to livestock health and productivity. This study evaluates the effectiveness of iron-manganese oxide (Fe/Mn oxides) in degrading DON. The DON degradation rate of Fe/Mn oxide reached 98.46 % in a controlled solution under specific conditions (0.2 % concentration, 37-85 °C, pH 6-7, 1-minute reaction time). When applied to actual feed, it reduced DON levels by approximately 49.3 % and remained stable in simulated gastrointestinal environments of weaned piglets. A 28-day trial involving 48 weaned piglets assessed the impacts of Fe/Mn oxides on health and growth. Results indicated that piglets consuming contaminated feed without the treatment exhibited reduced growth and compromised gut integrity, which were significantly mitigated by the addition of Fe/Mn oxides. Therefore, Fe/Mn oxides effectively reduce DON in feed and alleviate adverse health effects in piglets, making them a viable option to enhance safety and performance in mycotoxin-prone environments.

    Immobilization of Horseradish Peroxidase and Myoglobin Using Sodium Alginate for Treating Organic Pollutants

    Removing organic pollutants from wastewater is crucial to prevent environmental contamination and protect human health. Immobilized enzymes are increasingly being explored for wastewater treatment due to their specific catalytic activities, reusability, and stability under various environmental conditions. Peroxidases, such as horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and myoglobin (Mb), are promising candidates for immobilized enzymes utilized in wastewater treatment due to their ability to facilitate the oxidation process of a wide range of organic molecules. However, the properties of the carrier and support materials greatly influence the stability and activity of immobilized HRP and Mb. In this research, we developed immobilized HRP and Mb using support material composed of sodium alginate and CaCl2 as carriers and glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent. Following this, the efficacy of immobilized HRP and Mb in removing aniline, phenol, and p-nitrophenol was assessed. Both immobilized enzymes removed all three organic pollutants from an aqueous solution, but Mb was more effective than HRP. After being immobilized, both enzymes became more resilient to changes in temperature and pH. Both immobilized enzymes retained their ability to eliminate organic pollutants through eight treatment cycles. Our study uncovered novel immobilized enzyme microspheres and demonstrated their successful application in wastewater treatment, paving the way for future research.

    Impact of cell wall polysaccharide modifications on the performance of Pichia pastoris: novel mutants with enhanced fitness and functionality for bioproduction applications.

    BACKGROUND: Pichia pastoris is a widely utilized host for heterologous protein expression and biotransformation. Despite the numerous strategies developed to optimize the chassis host GS115, the potential impact of changes in cell wall polysaccharides on the fitness and performance of P. pastoris remains largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate how alterations in cell wall polysaccharides affect the fitness and function of P. pastoris, contributing to a better understanding of its overall capabilities. RESULTS: Two novel mutants of GS115 chassis, H001 and H002, were established by inactivating the PAS_chr1-3_0225 and PAS_chr1-3_0661 genes involved in β-glucan biosynthesis. In comparison to GS115, both modified hosts exhibited a looser cell surface and larger cell size, accompanied by faster growth rates and higher carbon-to-biomass conversion ratios. When utilizing glucose, glycerol, and methanol as exclusive carbon sources, the carbon-to-biomass conversion rates of H001 surpassed GS115 by 10.00%, 9.23%, and 33.33%, respectively. Similarly, H002 exhibited even higher increases of 32.50%, 12.31%, and 53.33% in carbon-to-biomass conversion compared to GS115 under the same carbon sources. Both chassis displayed elevated expression levels of green fluorescent protein (GFP) and human epidermal growth factor (hegf). Compared to GS115/pGAPZ A-gfp, H002/pGAPZ A-gfp showed a 57.64% higher GFP expression, while H002/pPICZα A-hegf produced 66.76% more hegf. Additionally, both mutant hosts exhibited enhanced biosynthesis efficiencies of S-adenosyl-L-methionine and ergothioneine. H001/pGAPZ A-sam2 synthesized 21.28% more SAM at 1.14 g/L compared to GS115/pGAPZ A-sam2, and H001/pGAPZ A-egt1E obtained 45.41% more ERG at 75.85 mg/L. The improved performance of H001 and H002 was likely attributed to increased supplies of NADPH and ATP. Specifically, H001 and H002 exhibited 5.00-fold and 1.55-fold higher ATP levels under glycerol, and 6.64- and 1.47-times higher ATP levels under methanol, respectively, compared to GS115. Comparative lipidomic analysis also indicated that the mutations generated richer unsaturated lipids on cell wall, leading to resilience to oxidative damage. CONCLUSIONS: Two novel P. pastoris chassis hosts with impaired β-1,3-D-glucan biosynthesis were developed, showcasing enhanced performances in terms of growth rate, protein expression, and catalytic capabilities. These hosts exhibit the potential to serve as attractive alternatives to P. pastoris GS115 for various bioproduction applications.

    Inactivation of salmonella enterica serovar enteritidis on chicken eggshells using blue light

    Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a pathogen that poses a health risk. Blue light (BL), an emerging sanitization technology, was employed for the first time in the present study to inactivate S. Enteritidis on eggshell surfaces and its influence on maintaining eggshell freshness was investigated systematically. The results showed that 415 nm-BL irradiation at a dose of 360 J/cm2 reduced 5.19 log CFU/mL of S. Enteritidis in vitro. The test on eggshells inoculated with S. Enteritidis showed that a BL dose at 54.6 J/cm2 caused a 3.73 log CFU reduction per eggshell surface and the impact of BL inactivation could be sustained in post-5-week storage. The quality of the tested eggs (weight loss, yolk index, Haugh unit (HU) and albumen pH) demonstrated that BL treatments had negligible effects on the albumen pH of eggs. However, compared to the control, BL-treated eggs showed lower weight loss and higher HU after 5 weeks of storage at 25◦C and 65% humidity and yolk index in the control group could not be determined after 5 weeks of storage. Besides, the total amino acid content of the BL-treated egg was higher than the control, exhibiting an advantage of BL irradiation in maintaining the nutrient quality of whole eggs. The current study determined the efficacy of BL against S. Enteritidis on eggshell and suggested that BL could be an effective application in maintaining the freshness and quality of eggs.

    Interfacial composition of coenzyme Q10 emulsions impacts coagulation of fortified milk during gastric digestion

    This study aimed to investigate the gastric digestion behaviour of heat-treated enriched milk containing Coenzyme Q10-loaded emulsions with different interfacial compositions. Four enriched milk types were compared: pasteurized with a Tween 80 stabilised emulsion (PAST-TW80), or with a sodium caseinate-stabilised emulsion (PAST-NaCN), and UHT with a TW80-stabilised emulsion (UHT-TW80), or PAST with a NaCN-stabilised emulsion (UHT-NaCN); all loaded with Coenzyme Q10. An in vitro dynamic gastric digestion model (Human Gastric Simulator) was utilized and the kinetics of milk coagulation and emptying of protein, lipid and Coenzyme Q10 were monitored. Adding NaCN-stabilised emulsion to heated milk led to a largely fragmented curd with signs of extensive droplets coalescence, disintegrating rapidly and accelerating protein and lipid release. Heated milk with TW80-stabilised emulsion produced a compact and closely integrated curd with limited coalescence, slowing nutrient emptying. UHT milk showed more curd fragmentation than PAST milk, regardless of emulsion type. The release profiles of Coenzyme Q10 were similar between UHT-TW80 and PAST-TW80 or between PAST-NaCN and UHT-NaCN, indicating the emulsion's interfacial composition as a key factor in controlling lipophilic bioactive release from the food matrix, regardless of heat treatment. These findings demonstrate that the emulsion's interfacial composition (NaCN vs TW80) and the heat treatment (PAST vs UHT) can be combined as a strategy to modulate milk coagulation kinetics and the rate of nutrient delivery to the small intestinal stage. This study provides insights into the development of functional milk products fortified with lipophilic bioactive compounds, as well as strategies for optimizing the controlled release of these compounds upon consumption.

    Investigation of the gastric digestion behavior of commercial infant formulae using an in vitro dynamic infant digestion model.

    The gastric digestion behavior of different commercial Stage 1 infant formulae (for 0-6 months) with different formulation backgrounds was investigated using an in vitro dynamic infant human gastric simulator (iHGS). The microstructural arrangements of the protein and lipid, colloidal stability and protein hydrolysis during digestion were elucidated. During gastric digestion, casein-dominant formulations showed a higher extent of aggregation due to their high proportion of casein micelles that underwent coagulation upon acidification and via the action of pepsin. The extensive protein coagulation/curd formation in casein-dominant infant formulae slowed the rate of protein hydrolysis and resulted in the retention of caseins in the iHGS for longer times. Confocal micrographs showed that oil droplets were entrapped in the curd particles of casein-dominant infant formulae, which consequently slowed the gastric emptying of lipids. Conversely, whey-dominant formulations showed a lower degree of protein aggregation that resulted in faster protein hydrolysis and rapid protein and lipid emptying from the iHGS. It was also revealed that whey-dominant infant formulae in the presence of biopolymers increased the viscosity of gastric chyme and induced the flocculation of oil droplets. This altered the rate of protein hydrolysis and emptying of lipids. Correlation analyses depicted the overall kinetics of gastric emptying of macronutrients during digestion and comprised two stages: (i) driven by the continuous stomach emptying and (ii) influenced by aggregation and coalescence indices. The present study highlights the similarities and differences in the digestion behaviors of commercial infant formulae based on important ingredients such as types of proteins and biopolymers, regardless of the formulation or processing histories.

    Large-scale synthesis of N-doped carbon capsules supporting atomically dispersed iron for efficient oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysis

    The large-scale synthesis of platinum-free electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a grand challenge. We report the large-scale production of stable and active ORR electrocatalysts based on iron, an earth-abundant element. A core–shell zeolitic imidazolate framework–tannic acid coordination polymer composite (ZIF-8@K-TA) was utilized as the catalyst precursor, which was transformed into iron atoms dispersed in hollow porous nitrogen-doped carbon capsules (H-Fe-Nx-C) through ion exchange and pyrolysis. H-Fe-Nx-C features site-isolated single-atom iron centers coordinated to nitrogen in graphitic layers, high levels of nitrogen doping, and high permeability to incoming gases. Benefiting from these characteristics, H-Fe-Nx-C demonstrated efficient electrocatalytic activity (E1/2 ​= ​0.92 ​V, vs. RHE) and stability towards the ORR in both alkaline and acidic media. In ORR performance, it surpassed the majority of recently reported Fe-N-C catalysts and the standard Pt/C catalyst. In addition, H-Fe-Nx-C showed outstanding tolerance to methanol.

    Limited Alcalase hydrolysis improves the thermally-induced gelation of quinoa protein isolate (QPI) dispersions

    Gelation is critical in many food applications of plant proteins. Herein, limited hydrolysis by Alcalase was used to promote thermally induced gelation of quinoa protein isolates (QPI). Mechanical properties of various QPI gels were characterised by small and large oscillatory shear deformation rheology while the microstructural features were observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Both the gel strength and microstructure are strongly related to the hydrolysis time. The maximum gel strength (∼100 Pa) was achieved after Alcalase hydrolysis for 1 min, which was ∼20 folds higher than that of untreated QPI. Extended hydrolysis up to 5 min progressively decreased the gel strength. A string-like interconnected protein network was formed after proteolysis. The change of gel strength with hydrolysis time correlated well to the Gʹ 20°C/Gʹ 90°C value and results of intrinsic fluorescence and surface hydrophobicity. The Gʹ 20°C/Gʹ 90°C value is sensitive to hydrogen bonds formation while the intrinsic fluorescence and surface hydrophobicity are associated with protein unfolding and exposure of hydrophobic groups. Therefore, both hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions are critical in improving the gel strength of QPI hydrolysates. Finally, FTIR analysis revealed that protein secondary structures are affected by the proteolysis and formation of inter-molecular hydrogen bonds between polypeptides. This study provides an efficient strategy for improving thermally induced gelation of QPI and enables a deep understanding of QPI gelation mechanism induced by Alcalase hydrolysis.

    Nanoengineered polymers and other organic materials in lung cancer treatment: Bridging the gap between research and clinical applications

    Cancer remains a major global health challenge, with increasing incidence and mortality rates projected for the coming years. Lung cancer, in particular, poses significant obstacles due to late-stage diagnosis and limited treatment options. While advancements in molecular diagnostics have been made, there is a critical need to connect the dots between laboratory and hospital for better lung cancer treatment. Systemic therapy plays a crucial role in treating advanced-stage lung cancer, and recent efforts have focused on developing innovative drug delivery techniques. Nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a promising approach to lung cancer treatment, offering enhanced drug delivery, active targeting, and reduced toxicity. Organic-based nanomaterials, like polymeric nanoparticles, solid lipid nanoparticles, and liposomes hold great potential in this field. This review examines the application of NPs in lung cancer treatment, highlights current therapies, explores organic nanoparticle-based approaches, and discusses limitations and future perspectives in clinical translation.

    Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer use efficiency improves alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) production and performance in alkaline desert soil.

    The deficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus is a primary constraint on the normal growth of alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.) in the alkaline desert soils of northern Xinjiang. Optimizing the combination of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers can maximally significantly enhance farmers' economic returns while concurrently mitigate soil environmental pollution. For this purpose, a field experiment based on a randomized complete block design was conducted over two consecutive years (2019 and 2020) in Shihezi, Xinjiang province, China. The WL366HQ variety of alfalfa was evaluated with four levels each of urea and monoammonium phosphate. The effects of fertilizer treatments were assessed on alfalfa yield, growth traits, nutritional quality, fertilizer use efficiency, and economic benefit. Application of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and their interaction significantly (P< 0.05) affected cumulative alfalfa dry matter (DM) yield. In general, compared to no-fertilization treatment, the application of N and P fertilizers resulted in increased plant height, stem thickness, crude protein, and ether extract of alfalfa, while neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) exhibited a decreasing trend. Additionally, while N and P fertilizer application reduced corresponding fertilizer use efficiency, it increased non-corresponding fertilizer use efficiency. During the two-year experimental period, the treatment involving the application of urea at 286.3 kg·ha-1 combined with monoammonium phosphate at 192 kg·ha-1 achieved the highest evaluation scores for production performance, fertilizer use efficiency, and total net profit, resulting in a net profit increase of 44.18% compared to the no-fertilizer treatment. These findings lay the groundwork for nuanced fertilization strategies in future alfalfa cultivation.

    Pesticide exposure in New Zealand school-aged children: Urinary concentrations of biomarkers and assessment of determinants

    This study aimed to assess pesticide exposure and its determinants in children aged 5-14 years. Urine samples (n = 953) were collected from 501 participating children living in urban areas (participant n = 300), rural areas but not on a farm (n = 76), and living on a farm (n = 125). The majority provided two samples, one in the high and one in the low spraying season. Information on diet, lifestyle, and demographic factors was collected by questionnaire. Urine was analysed for 20 pesticide biomarkers by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS. Nine analytes were detected in > 80% of samples, including six organophosphate insecticide metabolites (DMP, DMTP, DEP, DETP, TCPy, PNP), two pyrethroid insecticide metabolites (3-PBA, trans-DCCA), and one herbicide (2,4-D). The highest concentration was measured for TCPy (median 13 μg/g creatinine), a metabolite of chlorpyrifos and triclopyr, followed by DMP (11 μg/g) and DMTP (3.7 μg/g). Urine metabolite levels were generally similar or low compared to those reported for other countries, while relatively high for TCPy and pyrethroid metabolites. Living on a farm was associated with higher TCPy levels during the high spray season. Living in rural areas, dog ownership and in-home pest control were associated with higher levels of pyrethroid metabolites. Urinary concentrations of several pesticide metabolites were higher during the low spraying season, possibly due to consumption of imported fruits and vegetables. Organic fruit consumption was not associated with lower urine concentrations, but consumption of organic food other than fruit or vegetables was associated with lower concentrations of TCPy in the high spray season. In conclusion, compared to other countries such as the U.S., New Zealand children had relatively high exposures to chlorpyrifos/triclopyr and pyrethroids. Factors associated with exposure included age, season, area of residence, diet, in-home pest control, and pets.

    Prediction of seasonal population dynamics of Grapholita molesta (Busck) and Adoxophyes orana (Fischer von Röslerstamm) in peach orchards using sex pheromone trap and degree-days and its implications in pest management

    The successful management of lepidopteran moths in orchards usually depends on the precise forecast of adult activity. However, the seasonal phenology of moths varies between crop cultivars and years, making it difficult to schedule the control measures. Here, we monitored male flight activity of oriental fruit moth Grapholita molesta and summer fruit tortrix moth Adoxophyes orana by using sex pheromone traps in peach orchards of three different cultivars for three successive years. We developed a logistic multiple-peaks model to fit data and then calculated degree-days (DD) required for male activity and neonate emergency. Results show that G. molesta and A. orana males had 4–5 and 3 flight peaks per year, respectively. The seasonal phenology of G. molesta or A. orana was quite stable with an identical timing of each flight peak between cultivars in a year. The flight activity was usually higher in the second and third peaks for both moths, with a higher cumulative number of G. molesta males captured than that of A. orana. Compared to A. orana, G. molesta emerged early in spring and required lower degree-days to reach the subsequent flight peaks and for neonate emergency. Our results suggest that to decline the possibility of outbreaks of moths during the growing seasons, pheromone traps should be scheduled in April with a cumulative DD between 49.6 and 207.1 for G. molesta and in mid-May–early June with a cumulative DD between 450.4 and 866.7 for A. orana, aiming to trap the newly emerged male adults or disrupting female mating success of overwintered moths in orchards. Based on the thermal requirement for egg hatching (i.e., 79.4 DD for G. molesta and 90.0 DD for A. orana), insecticide treatments would be applied in late-April–early May and late May–early June to reduce the field population density of neonates of G. molesta and A. orana, respectively, to reduce fruit damage in orchards. Furthermore, pheromone traps set up in late July–early August (573.8–1025.2 DD) for G. molesta and in mid-September (1539.7–1788.9 DD) for A. orana may suppress overwintering populations and thus decrease pest infestation in next year.

    Psychometric validation of the sibling inventory of behavior in three- to six-year-old Chinese children.

    With increasing attention on sibling relationship studies in China, one problem that has been neglected is the limited validation of instruments used to assess these relationships. The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Sibling Inventory of Behavior to measure Chinese children’s sibling relationships using a stratified random sample of 590 parents of three- to six-year-olds in three economic regions. The confirmatory factor analysis obtained an adequate fit, suggesting that the Chinese version of the instrument had a six-factor structure (i.e., Companionship, Empathy, Teaching, Rivalry, Aggression, and Avoidance). It demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency as well as test–retest reliability. Results of discriminant, convergent, and criterion-related validity test also fulfilled psychometric requirements. Furthermore, the residual measurement invariance across regions was discovered. Given the importance, emergence, and tendency of sibling studies in China, having a reliable and valid instrument with robust psychometric properties is essential and impactful.

    Remediation Technologies for Neonicotinoids in Contaminated Environments: Current State and Future Prospects

    Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are synthetic insecticides with broad-spectrum insecticidal activity and outstanding efficacy. However, their extensive use and persistence in the environment have resulted in the accumulation and biomagnification of NEOs, posing significant risks to non-target organisms and humans. This review provides a summary of research history, advancements, and highlighted topics in NEOs remediation technologies and mechanisms. Various remediation approaches have been developed, including physiochemical, microbial, and phytoremediation, with microbial and physicochemical remediation being the most extensively studied. Recent advances in physiochemical remediation have led to the development of innovative adsorbents, photocatalysts, and optimized treatment processes. High-efficiency degrading strains with well-characterized metabolic pathways have been successfully isolated and cultured for microbial remediation, while many plant species have shown great potential for phytoremediation. However, significant challenges and gaps remain in this field. Future research should prioritize isolating, domesticating or engineering high efficiency, broad-spectrum microbial strains for NEO degradation, as well as developing synergistic remediation techniques to enhance removal efficiency on multiple NEOs with varying concentrations in different environmental media. Furthermore, a shift from pipe-end treatment to pollution prevention strategies is needed, including the development of green and economically efficient alternatives such as biological insecticides. Integrated remediation technologies and case-specific strategies that can be applied to practical remediation projects need to be developed, along with clarifying NEO degradation mechanisms to improve remediation efficiency. The successful implementation of these strategies will help reduce the negative impact of NEOs on the environment and human health.

    The Use of Value Capture for Transport Projects in China: Opportunities and Challenges

    Value capture (VC) could be a useful tool to address the huge demand for public transport infrastructure funding in China. This research identifies the opportunities and challenges faced by VC implementation in China and explains how local governments and local transit agencies dealt with the regulatory barriers. The findings of this research offer insights including: (1) macro environment, regulatory framework, and supportive policy environment provide opportunities to adopt VC projects, while the risk of acquiring land vale cannot be isolated from the global political and economic situations; (2) the regulatory challenges of land transactions and lack of property tax system restrict the application of VC; (3) evidence from the case study of Shenzhen demonstrates that local government may creatively deal with the regulatory challenges to do VC and benefit local community; (4) institutional capacity is vital to implement VC. The analysis of Shenzhen experience can provide a reference for other Chinese cities to implement VC.

    Charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions in proton-proton collisions at square root of s = 7  TeV are measured with the inner tracking system of the CMS detector at the LHC. The charged-hadron yield is obtained by counting the number of reconstructed hits, hit pairs, and fully reconstructed charged-particle tracks. The combination of the three methods gives a charged-particle multiplicity per unit of pseudorapidity dN(ch)/dη|(|η|<0.5) = 5.78 ± 0.01(stat) ± 0.23(syst) for non-single-diffractive events, higher than predicted by commonly used models. The relative increase in charged-particle multiplicity from square root of s = 0.9 to 7 TeV is [66.1 ± 1.0(stat) ± 4.2(syst)]%. The mean transverse momentum is measured to be 0.545 ± 0.005(stat) ± 0.015(syst)  GeV/c. The results are compared with similar measurements at lower energies.
