Item ‘We're Hands-On People’: Healing Diabetes in the Absence of Traditional Healers in an Aboriginal Community in Northern Territory, Australia.(Association of Social Anthropologists of Aotearoa New Zealand (ASAANZ), 2021-03-12) Mitchell AE; Farrelly T; Andrews RThis study of a remote Aboriginal community in Australia’s Northern Territory in 2014 sought to understand diabetes from a local Aboriginal perspective. Participants drew on a variety of holistic healing methods in the absence of an individual or individuals identified as holding a healing role in the community. The study offers an alternative to the common assumption that all communities can identify specific individuals as Aboriginal healers who are central to maintaining Aboriginal beliefs and wellbeing who contribute to holistic health (Clarke 2008; Maher 1999; McDonald 2006; Seathre 2013; Williams 2011). This research found the seven adult Aboriginal diabetes patients participating in the longitudinal ethnographic study actively engaged in self-healing strategies. Moreover, diabetes clinicians could combine local remedies and biomedical treatment to heal diabetes within the clinic, as well as actively engaging the patient in their own treatment, effective to reduce the symptoms and prevalence of diabetes in Aboriginal populations.Item Investigating principles that underlie frameworks for Pacific health research using a co-design approach: learnings from a Tongan community based project(Pasifika Medical Association, 22/06/2021) Pulu V; Tiatia-Seath J; Borman B; Firestone RThe New Zealand Tongan peoples’ worldview leans more towards a traditional and indigenous paradigm that encompasses the importance of family, spirituality or Christian beliefs and connection with their environment. These priorities align with core principles and values of co-design, and therefore, co-designed interventions will be better used and accepted in addressing health issues prevalent in the Tongan community. Co-design methods adapt to the cultural setting they are applied to, prioritizes the Tongan peoples’ cultural values and world views and captures the needs of the Tongan community to inform the development of the intervention. It supports family members to stand with authority, as well as place the Tongan participants at the centre of the research by including families, employing culturally safe practices, addressing the broader determinants of health, and focusing on system issues rather than on individuals.The generation of discussion in co-design further aligns with the Pacific knowledge of systems, creation stories and oral stories which provide a culturally empowering way to generate discussion and insights from the Tongan communityItem Potential of Beetroot and Blackcurrant Compounds to Improve Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 25/05/2021) Haswell C; Ali A; Page R; Hurst R; Rutherfurd-Markwick KMetabolic syndrome (MetS) is a group of metabolic abnormalities, which together lead to increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), as well as reduced quality of life. Dietary nitrate, betalains and anthocyanins may improve risk factors for MetS and reduce the risk of development of CHD and T2DM. Beetroot is a rich source of dietary nitrate, and anthocyanins are present in high concentrations in blackcurrants. This narrative review considers the efficacy of beetroot and blackcurrant compounds as potential agents to improve MetS risk factors, which could lead to decreased risk of CHD and T2DM. Further research is needed to establish the mechanisms through which these outcomes may occur, and chronic supplementation studies in humans may corroborate promising findings from animal models and acute human trials.
