Item Growth and milk production of dairy heifers born to two-year-old or mixed-age dams(New Zealand Society of Animal Production, 2019-07-02) Handcock RC; Lopez-Villalobos N; Back PJ; Hickson RE; McNaughton LRKeeping replacement heifers that were the progeny of primiparous cows mated by artificial insemination, enhances rates of genetic gain. Heifers that were the progeny of primiparous cows were lighter at birth and grew at a slower rate to first calving compared with heifers born to multiparous dams. Heifers that were heavier before first calving produced more milk than did lighter heifers. This study aimed to determine if there were liveweight (LWT) or milk-production disadvantages for heifers born from primiparous compared with multiparous dams. Data comprised of LWT records from 189,936 New Zealand dairy heifers. Dams were allocated to four groups according to their age: two (2yo; n=13,717), three (3yo; n=39,258), four to eight (4-8yo; n=120,859) and nine years old or greater (≥9yo; n=16,102). Heifers born to 2yo dams were lighter (P<0.01) from three to 21 months of age than heifers born to 3yo and 4-8yo dams. The progeny of 2yo and 3yo dams produced similar milksolids yields during their first lactation (304.9±1.6 and 304.1±1.5 kg, respectively), but more (P<0.01) than that of 4-8yo dams (302.4±1.5) and ≥9yo dams (P<0.001; 297.8±1.6 kg). Heifers born to 2yo dams were lighter but produced more milk than heifers from older dams.Item Effectiveness of dairy products to protect against cognitive decline in later life: a narrative review(Frontiers Media S.A., 2024-06-19) Anderson RC; Alpass FM; Drevenšek, GAs the world's population ages the prevalence of age-related health concerns is increasing, including neurodegeneration disorders such as mild cognitive impairment, vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Diet is a key modifiable risk factor for the development of neurodegeneration, likely due to gut-brain axis interactions related to neuroinflammation. Analyses of dietary patterns identified dairy as being part of a cognitively healthy diet; however, its contribution to cognitive outcomes is difficult to discern. This narrative review evaluates the literature to determine whether there is sufficient evidence that the consumption of dairy products helps to maintain cognitive function in later life. A search using the terms (dairy OR milk OR cheese OR yogurt OR yogurt) AND ("mild cognitive impairment" OR dementia OR "Alzheimer's disease") identified 796 articles. After screening and sorting, 23 observational studies and 6 intervention studies were identified. The results of the observational studies implied that the relationship between total dairy consumption and cognitive outcomes is inverse U-shaped, with moderate consumption (1-2 servings per day) being the most beneficial. The analysis of the intake of different types of dairy products indicated that fermented products, particularly cheese, were most likely responsible for the observed benefits. The experimental studies all used dairy-derived peptides produced during fermentation as the dietary intervention, and the results indicated that these could be an effective treatment for early-stage cognitive impairment. Further experimental studies with whole dairy products, particularly fermented dairy, are needed to determine whether the regular consumption of these foods should be recommended to maximize the likelihood of healthy cognitive aging.Item The impact of heat treatment of bovine milk on gastric emptying and nutrient appearance in peripheral circulation in healthy females: a randomized controlled trial comparing pasteurized and ultra-high temperature milk(Elsevier Inc on behalf of the American Society for Nutrition, 2024-05-01) Milan AM; Barnett MPG; McNabb WC; Roy NC; Coutinho S; Hoad CL; Marciani L; Nivins S; Sharif H; Calder S; Du P; Gharibans AA; O'Grady G; Fraser K; Bernstein D; Rosanowski SM; Sharma P; Shrestha A; Mithen RFBACKGROUND: Heat treatments of dairy, including pasteurization and ultra-high temperature (UHT) processing, alter milk macromolecular structures, and ultimately affect digestion. In vitro, animal, and human studies show faster nutrient release or circulating appearance after consuming UHT milk (UHT-M) compared with pasteurized milk (PAST-M), with a faster gastric emptying (GE) rate proposed as a possible mechanism. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of milk heat treatment on GE as a mechanism of faster nutrient appearance in blood. We hypothesized that GE and circulating nutrient delivery following consumption would be faster for UHT-M than PAST-M. METHODS: In this double-blind randomized controlled cross-over trial, healthy female (n = 20; 27.3 ± 1.4 y, mean ± SD) habitual dairy consumers, consumed 500 mL of either homogenized bovine UHT-M or PAST-M (1340 compared with 1320 kJ). Gastric content volume (GCV) emptying half-time (T50) was assessed over 3 h by magnetic resonance imaging subjective digestive symptoms, plasma amino acid, lipid and B vitamin concentrations, and gastric myoelectrical activity were measured over 5 h. RESULTS: Although GCV T50 did not differ (102 ± 7 min compared with 89 ± 8 min, mean ± SEM, UHT-M and PAST-M, respectively; P = 0.051), GCV time to emptying 25% of the volume was 31% longer following UHT-M compared with PAST-M (42 ± 2 compared with 32 ± 4 min, P = 0.004). Although GCV remained larger for a longer duration following UHT-M (treatment × time interaction, P = 0.002), plasma essential amino acid AUC was greater following UHT-M than PAST-M (55,324 ± 3809 compared with 36,598 ± 5673 μmol·min·L-1, P = 0.006). Heat treatment did not impact gastric myoelectrical activity, plasma appetite hormone markers or subjective appetite scores. CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to expectations, GE was slower with UHT-M, yet, as anticipated, aminoacidemia was greater. The larger GCV following UHT-M suggests that gastric volume may poorly predict circulating nutrient appearance from complex food matrices. Dairy heat treatment may be an effective tool to modify nutrient release by impacting digestion kinetics. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRY: www.anzctr.org.au (ACTRN12620000172909).Item Modeling the Contribution of Milk to Global Nutrition(Frontiers Media S.A., 2022-01-13) Smith NW; Fletcher AJ; Hill JP; McNabb WC; Skeaff SANutrient-rich foods play a major role in countering the challenges of nourishing an increasing global population. Milk is a source of high-quality protein and bioavailable amino acids, several vitamins, and minerals such as calcium. We used the DELTA Model, which calculates the delivery of nutrition from global food production scenarios, to examine the role of milk in global nutrition. Of the 29 nutrients considered by the model, milk contributes to the global availability of 28. Milk is the main contributing food item for calcium (49% of global nutrient availability), Vitamin B2 (24%), lysine (18%), and dietary fat (15%), and contributes more than 10% of global nutrient availability for a further five indispensable amino acids, protein, vitamins A, B5, and B12, phosphorous, and potassium. Despite these high contributions to individual nutrients, milk is responsible for only 7% of food energy availability, indicating a valuable contribution to global nutrition without necessitating high concomitant energy intakes. Among the 98 food items considered by the model, milk ranks in the top five contributors to 23 of the 29 nutrients modeled. This quantification of the importance of milk to global nutrition in the current global food system demonstrates the need for the high valuation of this food when considering future changes to the system.Item Predicting the Feed Intake of Artificially Reared Pre-Weaned Lambs from Faecal and Dietary Chemical Composition(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2022-06) Anim-Jnr AS; Morel PCH; Kenyon PR; Blair HT; Leury BJPredicting feed intake in suckling lambs consuming both milk and pasture can be challenging, and thus intake values are often derived from solely milk or solid feed consumption. The present study investigated if dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and metabolisable energy (ME) intakes of lambs given a combination of milk and pellets under controlled conditions could be predicted with enough precision using dietary and faecal chemical composition. A total of 34 pre-weaned lambs bottle-fed milk replacer with or without access to pellets and kept in metabolic cages for four days were used. To develop the prediction equations, 54 faecal samples with detailed information on their chemical compositions, and the feed consumed by the lambs, were used. Pellet DMI was predicted from neutral detergent fibre concentration in faeces and pellets, pellets %DM, and live weight (LW) of lambs. Milk DMI was predicted from faecal Nitrogen concentration and LW. Milk and pellet DMI and their ME content were combined to predict DMI/d and ME intake/d. The equations developed were validated against 40 spot faecal samples randomly selected from the lambs. DM, OM, and ME intakes were predicted with high accuracy and precision. The results showed that the developed equations can be used with enough accuracy to predict ME, OM, and DM intakes in pre-weaned lambs ingesting milk and pellets concurrently, thus the results revealed that the established equations may be used to predict ME, OM, and DM intakes in pre-weaned lambs drinking milk and pellets at the same time, allowing feeding regimens for young lambs to be developed.Item Ruminant Milk-Derived Extracellular Vesicles: A Nutritional and Therapeutic Opportunity?(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2021-07-22) Ong SL; Blenkiron C; Haines S; Acevedo-Fani A; Leite JAS; Zempleni J; Anderson RC; McCann MJ; Chassard CMilk has been shown to contain a specific fraction of extracellular particles that are reported to resist digestion and are purposefully packaged with lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids to exert specific biological effects. These findings suggest that these particles may have a role in the quality of infant nutrition, particularly in the early phase of life when many of the foundations of an infant's potential for health and overall wellness are established. However, much of the current research focuses on human or cow milk only, and there is a knowledge gap in how milk from other species, which may be more commonly consumed in different regions, could also have these reported biological effects. Our review provides a summary of the studies into the extracellular particle fraction of milk from a wider range of ruminants and pseudo-ruminants, focusing on how this fraction is isolated and characterised, the stability and uptake of the fraction, and the reported biological effects of these fractions in a range of model systems. As the individual composition of milk from different species is known to differ, we propose that the extracellular particle fraction of milk from non-traditional and minority species may also have important and distinct biological properties that warrant further study.Item Structural changes in milk from different species during gastric digestion in piglets(Elsevier Inc and Fass Inc on behalf of the American Dairy Science Association, 2022-05) Roy D; Moughan PJ; Ye A; Hodgkinson SM; Stroebinger N; Li S; Dave AC; Montoya CA; Singh HThis study investigated the structural and physicochemical changes that occur in milk, a naturally designed complex structured emulsion, during gastric digestion using the bottle-fed piglet as an animal model. The gastric digestions of cow, goat, and sheep milk were compared in male piglets euthanized at different postfeeding times to collect the stomach chyme. The cow and noncow milks separated into curd (aggregated caseins) and liquid (mostly soluble whey) phases in the piglet's stomach. For milk from all the species, the curd remained longer in the stomach because of its slow disintegration, whereas the liquid phase emptied readily. The majority of the fat globules were found to be entrapped within the protein network of the curd. The rate of release of fat globules was strongly dependent on the breakdown of the surrounding protein network of the curd. The consistency of the gastric curds changed as digestion progressed, with goat and sheep milk curds having relatively softer curd consistency and less fused protein networks, especially toward the end of digestion. This might have led to the lower protein and fat retention in the goat and sheep milk curds and relatively faster gastric emptying of these nutrients from goat and sheep milk in comparison to cow milk. This in vivo study provided new and enhanced understanding of the mechanisms of the gastric digestion of milk from different species. This study aimed to determine whether there were body weight, milk production, or reproductive disadvantages for heifers born from primiparous compared with multiparous dams. Data comprised body weight records from 189,936 New Zealand dairy heifers. Dams were allocated to 4 groups according to their age: 2 yr old (n = 13,717), 3 yr old (n = 39,258), 4 to 8 yr old (n = 120,859), and 9 yr or older (n = 16,102). Heifers that were the progeny of 2-year-old dams were lighter from 3 to 21 mo of age than heifers that were the progeny of 3-yr-old and 4- to 8-yr-old dams. The progeny of 2- and 3-yr-old dams produced similar milk solids yields (± standard error of the mean) during their first lactation (304.9 ± 1.6 and 304.1 ± 1.5 kg, respectively), but more than that of 4- to 8-yr-old dams (302.4 ± 1.5). Furthermore, the progeny of 2-yr-old dams had similar stayabilities to first, second, and third calving to that of the progeny of 4- to 8-yr-old and ≥9-yr-old dams. Reproductive performance, as measured by calving and recalving rates was similar in first-calving heifers of all age-of-dam classes. Additionally, second and third calving rates were similar for the progeny of 2- and 3-yr-old dams. Interestingly, the progeny of dams ≥9 yr old had the lowest milk solids production in first (297.8 ± 1.6 kg), second (341.6 ± 1.8 kg), and third lactations (393.2 ± 2.4 kg). Based on the results of this study, keeping replacements from dams aged 9 yr and over could not be recommended. Furthermore, heifers born to 2-yr-old dams were lighter but produced more milk than heifers from older dams, in addition to having superior genetic merit.Item Well-being Messaging for Mammalian Milks: A Scoping Review(Frontiers Media S.A., 2021-10-22) Moradi S; Hort J; Roy NCHaving a holistic understanding of research on well-being messaging for milk is vital to allow the optimal communication of the association between milk consumption and various nutritional, physical, and psychological benefits to the consumer. This work is a unique interdisciplinary, scoping review of existing research on well-being messaging for milk. Well-being messages are ways to communicate the broad well-being benefits of specific products to the consumer through information on food content or statements that link a product with favourable components, functions, or well-being outcomes. Leveraging this broad definition, and by proposing a guiding theoretical model that considers well-being messaging as a form of communication, milk well-being messaging literature has been mapped across time, geographical locations, disciplines, and product types. Two hundred forty-six were records included in this review, of which 177 were empirical studies. Studies were disseminated between 1954 and 2019, with 54.9% published after 2011. Food, Agriculture, and Biological Sciences (N = 109), Nutrition and Dietetics (N = 78), and Medicine, Public Health, and Health Professions (N = 69) disciplines have attracted the most publications, with numbers generally increasing in most recent years. The majority of included non-empirical records (69.6%) provide lists of commercially available products carrying well-being messaging and/or regulations on the use of particular well-being messages for milk according to various legislative authorities. Most of the empirical studies were conducted in North America (N = 71), West Europe (N = 52), and Oceania (N = 22), and on plain (i.e., unflavoured) milk (N = 152). Whereas, most studied elements of well-being messaging for milk across time, i.e., message (N = 169), product (N = 141), receiver (N = 101), and context (N = 72) have seen an increasing number of studies in recent years; sender (N = 51) and medium (N = 27) have been even less studied in the past four years. A more detailed analysis of research trends in each element of well-being messaging is reported. The research highlights immediate and strategic knowledge gaps that need further attention from researchers and/or policymakers in order to improve the "messaging" of well-being benefits of milk consumption to the consumer.
