dc.description.abstractCosmetic issues result in major losses and rejection of many fruits at both initial grading and the final market. This is especially true for countries like New Zealand which due to their isolation, transport fresh produce large distances and rely on quality to make it viable. Kiwifruit have recently been identified to suffer from a superficial injury termed Superficial Skin Rub (SSR). This injury was noticed after transport in both New Zealand and some countries outside New Zealand. SSR is a concern for the kiwifruit industry due to the cosmetic changes characteristic of SSR.--Shortened abstract

thesis.description.doctoral-citation-longThe New Zealand kiwifruit industry relies on exceptional fruit quality to compete in global markets. Reaching these markets requires large amounts of transport and handling which introduce avenues for mechanical injuries to occur. Mr Sneddon attempted to develop an objective assessment for superficial injuries and examined numerous variables for their importance in the superficial injury susceptibility of two different kiwifruit cultivars across multiple years. The experimental results demonstrated that objectively assessing superficial injuries in kiwifruit was possible but requires more refinement. Moreover, the outcomes revealed that numerous fruit and environmental factors may influence kiwifruit superficial injury susceptibility.
