dc.description.abstract‘Zes008’ (Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis) is a recently developed kiwifruit cultivar in New Zealand, notable for its red flesh colour and high sweetness. However, its rapid ripening and short storage life in the regular cool chain create challenges for export and supply chain management. To extend the storage life of ‘Zes008’, multiple controlled and modified atmosphere technologies with reduced oxygen (O2) and elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) were evaluated in this study. A range of controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions were tested over 8 weeks of cool storage and subsequent shelf life. An optimal CA condition for maintaining the firmness of ‘Zes008’ was identified. However, CA would be challenging to achieve under sea freight conditions. In addition, rapid softening during retail display conditions also represented a risk of resulting in a poor consumer experience.--Shortened abstract

thesis.description.doctoral-citation-abridgedThe new red-fleshed ‘Zes008’ kiwifruit has a short storage life due to rapid ripening. This research revealed its unique postharvest physiology and molecular characteristics, and also identified approaches to delay ‘Zes008’ ripening. The findings provide opportunities to extend the marketing window while maintaining fruit quality.
thesis.description.doctoral-citation-longThe newly developed red-fleshed ‘Zes008’ kiwifruit has a short storage life due to rapid ripening. This study investigated the effects of storage atmosphere on the postharvest physiology and quality of ‘Zes008’. The results showed that ‘Zes008’ has a high respiration rate and a distinctive pattern of ethylene production during postharvest storage. Manipulation of the storage atmosphere, combined with ethylene and temperature management, effectively delayed fruit ripening. These findings provide potential strategies to extend the market window of ‘Zes008’ while maintaining fruit quality.
