Ethnoburbs are suburban areas that are characterised by specific ethnic communities, which have significantly reshaped urban landscapes worldwide. This study examines how new Chinese migrant businesses have influenced the cultural and spatial development of ethnoburbs in Auckland, by focusing on the suburb of Albany. Based on in-depth interviews with 16 new Chinese migrant business-owners and guided by mixed embeddedness theory, the article explores how choices about business location relate to social networks, market demand, and institutional settings. We show that Chinese migrant entrepreneurs have actively shaped suburban spaces such as Albany through co-ethnic clustering, cultural branding, residential proximity, and symbolic place-making. These strategies have strengthened both the ethnic identity and economic viability of the area. Theoretically, the article extends mixed embeddedness theory by emphasising spatial agency and symbolic construction. Practically, it highlights the need for inclusive urban planning to support multicultural suburban economies. Overall, the study reframes ethnoburbs as dynamic outcomes of entrepreneurial and cultural strategies in migrant settlement.
