    Does Entrepreneurs’ Darwinian Social Identity Contribute to Business Performance via Corporate Social Responsibility in China? The Role of Entrepreneurs’ Well-Being

    Although the impact of entrepreneurs’ social identity on successful entrepreneurship has attracted much scholarly attention, it is often to evaluate successful entrepreneurship through direct channel to financial performance. Recently, there is a growing body of researches beginning to pay attention to the impact of entrepreneurs’ social identity on corporate social responsibility (CSR) regarded as indirect social aspect channel to successful entrepreneurship. However, little is known regarding how entrepreneurs’ Darwinian social identity affects CSR, which in turn, affects business performance. This study addresses this issue by combining stakeholder theory with social identity theory, to investigate the relationship between entrepreneurs’ Darwinian social identity and business performance via CSR. In addition, the moderating effect of entrepreneur’s well-being is further examined to uncover the interaction effect of the individual psychological resource on business performance. The empirical results indicate that entrepreneurs’ Darwinian social identity contributes positively to CSR, so as further to business performance. In addition, this relationship is further found to be significantly moderated by entrepreneurs’ well-being. The results indicate that entrepreneurs can achieve business success via CSR, by which entrepreneurs can further acquire successful entrepreneurship through caring more about their well-being.

    How does digital finance impact birth rates: Evidence from China

    Digital finance (DF), the integration of tradition financial services and new information technology, has been shown to have various impacts in social behaviour. However, how DF affects people's fertility behaviour is still under investigation and worth exploring from the point of view of long-term economic growth. By employing a DF index, publicly available city-level birth rates in 287 Chinese cities, we find DF has a negative influence on birth rates. This finding is supported by endogeneity and several robustness tests. Mechanism tests show DF increases investment opportunities and therefore reduces the need of having children for support in old age. DF increases consumption and possibly individualism and also increases women's economic independence and their opportunity cost of having children, leading to lower birth rates. Given the development of DF is an inevitable trend, we further find that out of the three components of DF index measures, the coverage of DF significantly decreases birth rates, while the higher level of DF development, depth and digitalization, have much less negative impact on birth rates. Finally, this negative impact can be moderated when governments make policy efforts to increase educational and medical resources and provide protection of religion. This paper provides a novel perspective on the influence of DF on social behaviour through DF's direct impact on investments, consumption and income.

    Early evolution of beetles regulated by the end-Permian deforestation.

    The end-Permian mass extinction (EPME) led to a severe terrestrial ecosystem collapse. However, the ecological response of insects-the most diverse group of organisms on Earth-to the EPME remains poorly understood. Here, we analyse beetle evolutionary history based on taxonomic diversity, morphological disparity, phylogeny, and ecological shifts from the Early Permian to Middle Triassic, using a comprehensive new dataset. Permian beetles were dominated by xylophagous stem groups with high diversity and disparity, which probably played an underappreciated role in the Permian carbon cycle. Our suite of analyses shows that Permian xylophagous beetles suffered a severe extinction during the EPME largely due to the collapse of forest ecosystems, resulting in an Early Triassic gap of xylophagous beetles. New xylophagous beetles appeared widely in the early Middle Triassic, which is consistent with the restoration of forest ecosystems. Our results highlight the ecological significance of insects in deep-time terrestrial ecosystems.

    Unveiling the Effects of Phosphorus on the Mineral Nutrient Content and Quality of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in Acidic Soils

    Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) grown in acidic soils is often affected by phosphorus (P) deficiency, which results in reduced mineral nutrient content and forage quality. In this context, the effects of phosphorus (P) fertiliser remain unclear. In this study, we analysed the effects of P application on mineral nutrient content and forage quality in aluminium (Al)-sensitive (Longzhong) and Al-tolerant (Trifecta) alfalfa cultivars cultivated in two acidic soil environments. Mineral nutrient content and quality were affected by genotype, soil type, and P treatment concentration (p < 0.001). In limestone soil, for Longzhong and Trifecta, the optimal potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) contents as well as crude protein content (CP) and ether extract (EE) values were observed at 20 mg P kg−1, that of the P content was observed at 40 mg P kg−1, and the minimum neutral detergent fibre (NDF) acid detergent lignin (ADL) values were observed at 40 mg P kg−1. In yellow soil, the maximum K, Ca, Mg, and P contents in Longzhong and Trifecta were observed at 40 mg P kg−1, whereas the maximum CP, EE, and ADL values were observed at 20 mg P kg−1. Our study provides an empirically based framework for optimising alfalfa fertilisation programmes in acidic soils.

    Discrete Random Renewable Replacements after the Expiration of Collaborative Preventive Maintenance Warranty

    With advanced digital technologies as the key support, many scholars and researchers have proposed various random warranty models by integrating mission cycles into the warranty stage. However, these existing warranty models are designed only from the manufacturer’s subjective perspective, ignoring certain consumer requirements. For instance, they overlook a wide range of warranty coverage, the pursuit of reliability improvement rather than mere minimal repair, and the need to limit the delay in repair. To address these consumer requirements, this paper proposes a novel random collaborative preventive maintenance warranty with repair-time threshold (RCPMW-RTT). This model incorporates terms that are jointly designed by manufacturers and consumers to meet specific consumer needs, thereby overcoming the limitations of existing warranty models. The introduction of a repair-time threshold aims to limit the time delay in repairing failures and to compensate for any losses incurred by consumers. Using probability theory, the RCPMW-RTT is evaluated in terms of cost and time, and relevant variants are derived by analyzing key parameters. As an exemplary representation of the RCPMW-RTT, two random replacement policies named the discrete random renewable back replacement (DRRBR) and the discrete random renewable front replacement (DRRFR) are proposed and modelled to ensure reliability after the expiration of the RCPMW-RTT. In both policies, product replacement is triggered either by the occurrence of the first extreme mission cycle or by reaching the limit on the number of non-extreme mission cycles, whichever comes first. Probability theory is used to present cost rates for both policies in order to determine optimal values for decision variables. Finally, numerical analysis is performed on the RCPMW-RTT to reveal hidden variation tendencies and mechanisms; numerical analysis is also performed on the DRRBR and the DRRFR. The numerical results show that the proposed random replacement policies are feasible and unique; the replacement time within the post-warranty coverage increases as the maintenance quality improves and the cost rate can be reduced by setting a smaller repair-time threshold.

    Effects of microwave processing in comparison to sous vide cooking on meat quality, protein structural changes, and in vitro digestibility

    This study investigated the effect of industrial microwave (MW) processing, and sous vide (SV) on goat and lamb biceps femoris, where samples were cooked to the same tenderness. The cooked meat quality and ultrastructure were analyzed along with determining the protein surface hydrophobicity, particle size distribution, secondary structure, and protein digestibility. MW-processing resulted in higher cooking loss and more ultrastructural damage than SV and also induced higher myofibrillar protein surface hydrophobicity. Both processes caused a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the β-sheet and an increase in the random coils with a reduction (p < 0.05) in α-helix and β-turns. Both processes led to different protein hydrolysis patterns (observed through SDS-PAGE), but overall free amino N release after digestion was not significantly different among them. The results suggest that MW and SV modify meat protein structure differently, but with the same meat tenderness level, these processes can lead to similar overall protein digestibility.

    Decoupling of nutrient stoichiometry in Suaeda glauca (Bunge) senesced leaves under salt treatment

    The stoichiometry of senesced leaves is pivotal in nutrient cycling and can be significantly influenced by soil salinization, a rising global issue threatening the functionality of ecosystems. However, the impacts of soil salinization on senesced leaf stoichiometry are not fully understood. In this study, we conducted a pot experiment with varying soil salt concentrations to examine their influence on the concentrations and stoichiometric ratios of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) in the senesced leaves of Suaeda glauca (Bunge). Compared to the control group, salt treatments significantly enhanced Na concentration while diminishing the concentrations of K, Ca, Mg, Zn, N, and P. Interestingly, as salinity levels escalated, N concentration maintained stability, whereas P concentration exhibited an increasing trend. Moreover, K, Ca, and Mg significantly declined as salt levels rose. Salt treatments brought about significant changes in stoichiometric ratios, with the N:P, K:Na, N:Na, N:Mg, and Ca : Mg ratios dropping and the N:Ca and N:K ratios rising, illustrating the varying nutrient coupling cycles under different salt conditions. These findings shed light on the plasticity of stoichiometric traits in S. glauca senesced leaves in response to soil salinization shifts, which could potentially offer insights into nutrient cycling reactions to soil salinization.

    Influences of nitrogen input forms and levels on phosphorus availability in karst grassland soils

    The availability of soil phosphorus (P), a crucial nutrient influencing plant productivity and ecosystem function, is impacted by continuously increasing nitrogen (N) enrichment, which changes the soil P cycle. The effect of varying forms of N input on soil P dynamics in P-limited karst grassland ecosystems remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a greenhouse experiment to explore the effects of various forms of N addition [Ca(NO3)2, NH4Cl, NH4NO3, Urea] on soil P fractions in these ecosystems, applying two levels (N1: 50 mg N kg−1soil, N2: 100 mg N kg−1soil) of N input in two soils (yellow soil, limestone soil). Results indicated that P fractions in both soil types were significantly affected by N additions, with yellow soil demonstrating a higher sensitivity to these additions, and this effect was strongly modulated by the form and level of N added. High N addition, rather than low N, significantly affect the P fractions in both soil types. Specially, except for Ca(NO3)2, high N addition significantly increased the available P in both soils, following the order: Urea and NH4NO3 > NH4Cl > Ca(NO3)2, and decreased NaHCO3-Pi in both soils. High N addition also significantly reduced NaOH-Po and C.HCl-Po fractions in yellow soil. Additionally, the response of root biomass and alkaline phosphatase activity in both soils to N input paralleled the trends observed in the available P fractions. Notably, changes in soil available P were strongly correlated with plant root biomass and soil alkaline phosphatase activity. Our study highlights that the N addition form significantly influences soil P availability, which is closely tied to plant root biomass and alkaline phosphatase activity. This finding underscores the importance of considering N input form to boost soil fertility and promote sustainable agriculture.

    Working with interpreters in the family violence sector in Australia: “It's very hard to be in between”

    This study explores the role of interpreters and experiences of interpreting within family violence service provision in Australia. Data were drawn from the ASPIRE Project, a community-based participatory research project involving in-depth interviews with service providers (n = 57) and refugee and migrant women who had experienced family violence (n = 46), and a focus group discussion with interpreters (n = 4). The findings show that interpreting services are often inadequate and can create additional safety risks through breaches of confidentiality and other practices that undermine women experiencing family violence. Interpreters themselves are insufficiently supported to undertake the complex and sometimes traumatising task of working in family violence service provision. Cultural conceptions around gender that arise in family violence situations can complicate interpreted interactions, with each party to the triad bringing their own intersectional experiences. Expectations of the role of the interpreter in this context are at times expanded to the role of cultural and institutional broker by service providers. In contrast, migrant and refugee women interviewed prioritised a model based on directly interpreted interactions embedded in the norm of impartiality to promote trust in this high-risk practice area.

    Reproductive coercion as a form of family violence against immigrant and refugee women in Australia

    Reproductive coercion (RC), generally considered a form of intimate partner violence (IPV), refers to perpetrator behaviours and actions that are intended to interfere with and control the autonomous decision-making of a person regarding their reproductive health. To date there are few studies that document RC as experienced by immigrant and refugee women. In this article, we explore cases of RC as described by women who were part of a larger qualitative study investigating violence against immigrant and refugee women in southern Australia. The study aimed to identify the types of RC detailed in immigrant and refugee women's narratives, and to illustrate the contexts in which these experiences occurred. Analysis followed Baxter and Jack's (2008) case study methodology; whereby particular "cases" are used to describe a phenomenon in context. Thirteen women from seven countries described experiences that fit definitions of RC. The cases describe various types of RC including violence during pregnancy with the intent of causing miscarriage, forced abortion, contraception sabotage and forced pregnancy. As well as intimate partners, some women described multiple perpetrators being complicit in their experience of RC, especially in regard to controlling women's access to, and interactions with health services. More information is needed about immigrant and refugee women's experiences of RC, and how vulnerability to multi-perpetrator violence affects health service access. In particular knowledge about how multi-perpetrator RC can affect consent processes for women who already face barriers to health care requires attention. Further research is required to address knowledge gaps about appropriate prevention and advocacy work about RC in refugee and migrant communities, and what training is needed for professionals in the family violence sector, women's health services, women's organisations, multicultural and ethno-specific services.
