Item Barriers and facilitators to implementation of healthy food and drink policies in public sector workplaces: a systematic literature review.(19/06/2023) Rosin M; Mackay S; Gerritsen S; Te Morenga L; Terry G; Ni Mhurchu CCONTEXT: Many countries and institutions have adopted policies to promote healthier food and drink availability in various settings, including public sector workplaces. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to systematically synthesize evidence on barriers and facilitators to implementation of and compliance with healthy food and drink policies aimed at the general adult population in public sector workplaces. DATA SOURCES: Nine scientific databases, 9 grey literature sources, and government websites in key English-speaking countries along with reference lists. DATA EXTRACTION: All identified records (N = 8559) were assessed for eligibility. Studies reporting on barriers and facilitators were included irrespective of study design and methods used but were excluded if they were published before 2000 or in a non-English language. DATA ANALYSIS: Forty-one studies were eligible for inclusion, mainly from Australia, the United States, and Canada. The most common workplace settings were healthcare facilities, sports and recreation centers, and government agencies. Interviews and surveys were the predominant methods of data collection. Methodological aspects were assessed with the Critical Appraisal Skills Program Qualitative Studies Checklist. Generally, there was poor reporting of data collection and analysis methods. Thematic synthesis identified 4 themes: (1) a ratified policy as the foundation of a successful implementation plan; (2) food providers' acceptance of implementation is rooted in positive stakeholder relationships, recognizing opportunities, and taking ownership; (3) creating customer demand for healthier options may relieve tension between policy objectives and business goals; and (4) food supply may limit the ability of food providers to implement the policy. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that although vendors encounter challenges, there are also factors that support healthy food and drink policy implementation in public sector workplaces. Understanding barriers and facilitators to successful policy implementation will significantly benefit stakeholders interested or engaging in healthy food and drink policy development and implementation. CRD42021246340.Item Remediation Technologies for Neonicotinoids in Contaminated Environments: Current State and Future Prospects(Elsevier, 16/06/2023) Wei J; Wang X; Tu C; Long T; Bu Y; Wang H; Jeyakumar P; Jiang J; Deng SNeonicotinoids (NEOs) are synthetic insecticides with broad-spectrum insecticidal activity and outstanding efficacy. However, their extensive use and persistence in the environment have resulted in the accumulation and biomagnification of NEOs, posing significant risks to non-target organisms and humans. This review provides a summary of research history, advancements, and highlighted topics in NEOs remediation technologies and mechanisms. Various remediation approaches have been developed, including physiochemical, microbial, and phytoremediation, with microbial and physicochemical remediation being the most extensively studied. Recent advances in physiochemical remediation have led to the development of innovative adsorbents, photocatalysts, and optimized treatment processes. High-efficiency degrading strains with well-characterized metabolic pathways have been successfully isolated and cultured for microbial remediation, while many plant species have shown great potential for phytoremediation. However, significant challenges and gaps remain in this field. Future research should prioritize isolating, domesticating or engineering high efficiency, broad-spectrum microbial strains for NEO degradation, as well as developing synergistic remediation techniques to enhance removal efficiency on multiple NEOs with varying concentrations in different environmental media. Furthermore, a shift from pipe-end treatment to pollution prevention strategies is needed, including the development of green and economically efficient alternatives such as biological insecticides. Integrated remediation technologies and case-specific strategies that can be applied to practical remediation projects need to be developed, along with clarifying NEO degradation mechanisms to improve remediation efficiency. The successful implementation of these strategies will help reduce the negative impact of NEOs on the environment and human health.Item The limits of satire, or the reification of cultural politics(SAGE Publications, 15/02/2023) Holm NItem Affect, responsibility, and how modes of engagement shape the experience of videogames(Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA), 13/12/2015) Veale, KRWhen considering the elements that shape our experience of fiction, the line distinguishing the text itself from the processes we go through in negotiating that text is easy to miss. Even something as simple as knowing roughly how far through a book we are as we read will influence our experience of the story. If the same story is moved into a hypertext context that eliminates that physical awareness from the experience, then that changes our mode of engagement. Understanding how different modes of engagement shape our experiences of fiction will be helpful not just for the analysis of new media storytelling, but for understanding how we have already been telling stories for a very long time. What sets the experience of videogames apart from other forms of mediated storytelling is that the person playing the game can come to feel responsible for events and characters within a fictional world.Item IKVAV-Containing Cell Membrane Penetrating Peptide Treatment Induces Changes in Cellular Morphology after Spinal Cord Injury(Canadian Center of Science and Education, 17/08/2016) Baltzer WI; kazemi S; Mansouri H; Mata J; Schilke KA cell membrane spanning peptide was used to increase the concentration of the IKVAV motif within damaged mouse spinal cord tissue. This peptide was injected directly to the lesion 24 hours after spinal cord compression injury. Because the membrane-spanning portion of the peptide adheres to tissue upon injection with a long half-life we hypothesized that the bioactive IKVAV sequence will provide a sustained regenerative signal at the sight of injury. Five different groups of mice were used and cellular morphology observations were undertaken using light and electron microscopy. Three surgical control groups: IKVAV, peptide and mannitol; one surgical treatment group: IKVAV-peptide; and one non-surgical control group: normal, were used in this experiment. In this study, treatment with IKVAV-peptide after SCI resulted in an increased number of protoplasmic astrocytes, large active motor neurons, and regeneration of muscle bundles followed by behavioral improvement. In this paper, we describe the cellular differences between all groups.Item The interface between indigenous knowledge and libraries: The need for non-Māori librarians to make sense of mātauranga Māori in their professional lives(Information Research, 15/12/2017) Oxborrow K; Goulding A; Lilley SCIntroduction. This paper outlines the context of research in progress, investigating how non-indigenous librarians in Aotearoa New Zealand make sense of indigenous knowledge in their professional lives. It presents evidence of developments in the information and library environments which make it imperative that non-Māori librarians engage appropriately with mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge). Method. An analysis of recent developments driving or inhibiting engagement with mātauranga Māori is presented alongside a review and synthesis of previous work relevant to the topic. Results. The analysis suggests that there are a number of specific issues at the interface between indigenous knowledge and libraries which make it a particularly pressing issue for libraries and librarians both in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Recent developments in the field including those around appropriate metadata and ownership protocols suggest that it is an area of growing importance in the profession. The issues identified and discussed in this paper form the contextual background for an interview-based study, currently in progress, incorporating elements of Dervin’s sense-making methodology. Conclusion. The many ways that librarians may encounter indigenous knowledge, and the national and international interest in the topic, highlight the issue of non-indigenous librarians’ engagement with indigenous knowledge as an important one for research.Item Inclusory constructions in the Māori languages of Aotearoa and the Southern Cook Islands(The Linguistic Society of New Zealand, 19/09/2019) Nicholas SA; Calude, AS; Kemmer, SThis paper discusses Lichtenberk’s (2000) notion of inclusory constructions as manifested in two closely related East Polynesian languages of the realm of New Zealand: New Zealand Māori and Cook Islands Māori. Both languages have productive inclusory constructions typically used to denote sets of human referents as in the following New Zealand Māori example. (1) Kua hoki atu a Mere rāua ko Reremoana. ‘Mere and Reremoana have gone back.‘ Inclusory constructions in both languages are formally identical and fit Lichenberk’s typology well. The two languages differ in their preference for using this construction, which is strongly preferred in New Zealand Māori but merely possible in Cook Islands Māori.Item Getting their wires crossed: Interpreters and clinicians' expectations of the role of the professional interpreters in the Australian health context(International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies, 16/11/2020) Crezee I; Zucchi E; Jülich SThe positive impact the provision of professional language services has in the health context is well documented: the greater the engagement of qualified interpreters and culturally competent health professionals, the better the health outcomes of patients with limited English proficiency. However, while most professional interpreters in Australia generally adhere to the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (2012a) Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct, a significant number appear to ignore or reject important precepts of the Code in their practice, especially if these interpreters are casual (non-inhouse) agency interpreters. Similarly, while most health professionals display an understanding of the role professional interpreters have in the health context, a number of them fail to grasp the importance of key elements of the Code of Ethics, including appropriate briefing, what should be interpreted and how, and the appropriate role boundaries of the interpreter. These findings are based on the analysis of two interpreter and two clinician surveys, both conducted in Australia.Item An experimental model of contusion injury in humans(Public Library of Science, 17/11/2022) Barnes M; Lomiwes D; Parry DAD; Stephen MIntroduction Contusion injuries are common in sport, but our knowledge of the responses to injury primarily come from animal studies and research using eccentric exercise. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a model of contusion injury in human participants and, additionally, investigate and compare physiological responses to four impact loads. Methods Thirty-two males were exposed to a single impact of either 4.2, 5.2, 6.2 or 7.2kg, dropped from 67 cm, on to the vastus lateralis of one leg. Maximum voluntary and electrically induced quadriceps force, and pressure pain threshold were measured, and blood sampling carried out, prior to and 30min, 24, 48 and 72h post-impact. Magnetic resonance imaging was carried out 24h post-impact to quantify oedema. Results Despite impact force with 7.2kg (1681.4 ± 235.6 N) not being different to 6.2kg (1690.7 ± 117.6 N), 7.2kg resulted in greater volume of oedema, voluntary force loss, pain and elevations in creatine kinase than the other loads. Although electrically induced force changed over time, post-hoc analysis failed to identify any changes. Interleukin-6 and prostaglandin-E2 did not change over time for any of the loads. Significant correlations were found between oedema volume, pressure pain threshold and maximum voluntary contraction force. Conclusions This is the first experimental study to investigate traumatic loading of skeletal muscle and the subsequent physiological responses associated with contusion injuries in humans. The absence of immediate elevations in creatine kinase and changes in electrically induced force suggest impact, with forces similar to those experienced in contact sport, does not cause significant, direct damage to skeletal muscle. However, the relationship between oedema volume, changes in pressure pain threshold and maximum voluntary contraction force suggests central inhibition plays a role in contusion-related muscle dysfunction.
