    Approaching the challenge of multi-phase, multi-hazard volcanic impact assessment through the lens of systemic risk: application to Taranaki Mounga

    Effective volcanic impact and risk assessment underpins effective volcanic disaster risk management. Yet contemporary volcanic risk assessments face a number of challenges, including delineating hazard and impact sequences, and identifying and quantifying systemic risks. A more holistic approach to impact assessment is required, which incorporates the complex, multi-hazard nature of volcanic eruptions and the dynamic nature of vulnerability before, during and after a volcanic event. Addressing this need requires a multidisciplinary, integrated approach, involving scientists and stakeholders to co-develop decision-support tools that are scientifically credible and operationally relevant to provide a foundation for robust, evidence-based risk reduction decisions. This study presents a dynamic, longitudinal impact assessment framework for multi-phase, multi-hazard volcanic events and applies the framework to interdependent critical infrastructure networks in the Taranaki region of Aotearoa New Zealand, where Taranaki Mounga volcano has a high likelihood of producing a multi-phase explosive eruption within the next 50 years. In the framework, multi-phase scenarios temporally alternate multi-hazard footprints with risk reduction opportunities. Thus, direct and cascading impacts and any risk management actions carry through to the next phase of activity. The framework forms a testbed for more targeted mitigation and response planning and allows the investigation of optimal intervention timing for mitigation strategies during an evolving eruption. Using ‘risk management’ scenarios, we find the timing of mitigation intervention to be crucial in reducing disaster losses associated with volcanic activity. This is particularly apparent in indirect, systemic losses that cascade from direct damage to infrastructure assets. This novel, dynamic impact assessment approach addresses the increasing end-user need for impact-based decision-support tools that inform robust response and resilience planning.

    Engaging publics in the transition to smart mobilities

    Commercial and public sector interests surrounding technological developments are promoting a widespread transition to autonomous vehicles, intelligent transportation systems and smart phone communications in everyday life, as part of the smart mobility agenda. There is, however, inadequate understanding about the impact of such a shift on potential users, their readiness to engage and their vision of transportation systems for the future. This paper presents the findings from a series of citizen panels, as part of a 2-year project based in south-west England, focusing on in-depth discussions regarding the future of commuting, the flow of the daily commute and the inclusion of publics in smart mobility planning. The paper makes three key propositions for researchers: enabling publics should lead to a visionary evolution in the development of sustainable transportation systems; commercial interests, public bodies and IT innovators must employ a holistic approach to mobility flows; and, processes engaging publics need to be inclusive when co-creating solutions in the transition to smart mobilities.

    Visual sound : classical concert experience design for millennials : thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Design at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

    This thesis explores ways of engaging millennials in meaningful and relevant experiences which they would not normally engage with. It uses classical music as its case study since the popularity of classical music with millennials is low and declining. This project carried out exploratory work in experience design, focused on identifying the factors that discourage young people from attending classical music concerts. It then proceeded to design a concert experience which would fulfill millennials’ social needs and expectations of what they hope to experience when attending a classical concert. Visual Sound is a prototype which supports the active engagement of audiences, enabling them to both participate and contribute in a multisensory orchestra experience through a mobile interface. Audience participation and music visualisation were combined to create a designed experience. Through research, development and testing, the thesis demonstrates principles that can be applied to engage millennial audiences.

    Beyond the Individual: the Complex Interplay of Creativity, Synthesis and Rigor in Design Led Research Processes.

    This paper sets out to provide insight into the current debate on art, science, and the need for rigor in providing a framework for the interpretation of creativity within design. A literature overview will outline the common concept on creativity processes. The model will be critiqued from various theoretical perspectives. The theory and approaches are then applied to a case study through which the conceptual framework of creativity will unfold. It is, however, not an exhaustive literature review, as the literature chosen is in particular very applicable to the case study in this paper. The paper will represent ongoing research.

    Theory as Process: “Keiko” and ‘Co-Creative Movement’.

    This paper explores how designers can connect broader understandings of leadership with specific design knowledge to ‘manage’ their thinking within the ideation process. The research outlines creativity as a rigorous process – focusing on ‘how’ we think instead of purely ‘what’ we think, as design leaders in an ever-changing design environment. One way of understanding and reflecting on our existing disciplinary experience is through researching other creative “ways” such as the Japanese martial art of ‘Aikido’. Both designers and Aikidoka refine through practice – a process of shifting and reframing knowledge – with the awareness coming through the ‘doing’. In Aikido this process is conveyed by the Japanese word “keiko” which means to train, to practice, to learn, or to engage in. The aim of this autoethnographic research – based on a Grounded Theory approach to data evaluation [5] and participant observation techniques, is to structure and visualize the initial findings. The results analyze the conceptual possibilities of extending Aikido theory beyond the conventional ‘dojo’ setting in order to develop a systematic methodology for thinking about ‘co-creative movement’ as a specific form of flow [3] for enabling knowledge exchange.

    Takemusu Aiki: Insights into Optimizing Ideational Flow

    This paper will investigate how designers can connect broader understandings of ‘leadership’with specific design knowledge to enhance creative performance. The emphasis is on how designers can potentially ‘manage’ their thinking within the ideation process – maximise “ways”to spread ‘memes’. A meme is a rule, concept, or idea that can be spread from one person to another. Designers have been described as ‘memetic engineers’ (Dawkins, 1989) because they produce memes or units of cultural information that are recycled and evolve over time. Memes emerge through ‘imitation and recombination’ according to Blackmore (1999), by mixing up ideas to produce new combinations. One approach to understanding and reflecting on existing disciplinary experiences, as well as challenging creative potential, is through researching other conative “ways” – such as ‘Aikido’ – to embrace and reflect on ‘how’ we think instead of purely ‘what’ we think.

    Public prototyping : a participatory design process exploring the application of co-creative sketching : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Design, Massey University, Institute of Communication Design, College of Creative Arts, Wellington, New Zealand

    The objective of this research is to demonstrate that co-creative sketching as a part of the participatory process has the potential to support the developmental nature of a visual communication tool used to promote the exchange of experience. The tool is intended to create an informative hub that influences a travellers experience of a location. Ethnographic research as reflective sketching was conducted in the Tongariro National Park. Within this setting reflective sketching located the kitchen and common area of traveller specific accommodation as an ideal collaborative environment to conduct participatory design research. In this collaborative environment snowboarders and skiers who are aged between 20-30 years are identified as the target audience. This specific audience participated in co-creative sessions throughout the design process, resulting in the participatory design of the tool. The design aim of the visual communication tool was to promote the exchange of experience between snowboarders and skiers about a specific location. This was achieved by adapting generative tools made up of a visual language which supported the word of mouth exchange and individual expression. The exchange of experiences was facilitated by co-creative sketching with the visual language during a state of play. Playful co-creative sketching supported word of mouth dialogue between the snowboarders and skiers in a way that co-created an informative visual representation of the dialogue or contextmap. The resulting contextmap represented an image for experience which was beyond an individuals conception and made individuals tacit-knowledge accessible to audiences within and outside the moment of exchange, creating an informative hub which influenced the specific audiences view of experience for a location. An action research methodology is used during the course of this research, informed by the approaches of co-creation, context-mapping and generative tools. These approaches constructed a theoretical framework for the participatory development and co-creative sketching of the communication tool. This supportive thesis discusses the context, the theoretical concepts and provides an in depth account on the research through design process; the week-by-week participatory process undertaken to develop the visual communication tool.

    Not what we are : the (co)re-creation of self : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Design in Fashion at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

    Researching through design, this thesis explores the implementation of an online kit as a means through which the postmodern individual can participate in the creative processes of home sewing. Through the development of a knowledge network that is built on co-creation, a new approach to the traditional producer/consumer relationship is investigated. This network is used to encourage the fulfilment of self through the process of re-creation, while targeting the contemporary consumer by combining electronic resources and social networking with the hands-on nature of creative process.
