Abstract
This thesis examines the role of the built environment within the
context of post conflict Timor Leste and explores its ability to
visually evidence the nation’s complex social, cultural and political
histories. Through the use of photographic documentation
I explore the physical legacies of colonial governance and foreign
occupation in contrast to new development and contemporary
vernacular architecture. The interrelationship of these contrasting
influences is explored through my visual research as I combine
them to provide documentation of Timor Leste’s contemporary
built environment.
