Item Formulation and characterization of polyester-lignite composite coated slow-release fertilizers(Springer Nature Switzerland AG, 26/09/2022) Gunaratnam A; Bishop P; Jeyakumar P; Grafton M; Davies CE; McCurdy MTwo polyester-lignite composite coated urea slow-release fertilizers (SRFs; Poly3 and Poly5) were developed and their physicochemical properties were studied. Both these SRFs significantly (p < 0.05) extended the urea release compared to uncoated urea; Poly3 and Poly5 by 117 and 172 h, respectively. The urea release characteristics of Poly5 were further enhanced by linseed oil application (Poly5-linseed). The SEM images demonstrated the coatings were in contact with the urea and encase urea particles completely with the average coating thickness of 167.2 ± 15 µm. The new interactions between polyester and lignite in the composite coating were confirmed by the FTIR analysis. Polyester-calcium carbonate (Polyester-CaCO3) coated SRFs (Calc3 and Calc5) were developed using CaCO3 as a filler in place of lignite and the urea dissolution rate was compared with Poly3 and Poly5. The urea release times for the polyester-CaCO3 formulations, 48 and 72 h, were significantly (P < 0.05) lower than the polyester-lignite formulation, showing that lignite imparted greater control over release time than CaCO3. Findings from this work showed that polyester-lignite composites can be used as a coating material for SRFs.Item The effects of dispersion on time-of-flight acoustic velocity measurements in a wooden rod(Elsevier BV, 2023-03) Bakar AHA; Legg M; Konings D; Alam FThe stiffness of wood can be estimated from the acoustic velocity in the longitudinal direction. Studies have reported that stiffness measurements obtained using time-of-flight acoustic velocity measurements are overestimated compared to those obtained using the acoustic resonance and bending test methods. More research is needed to understand what is causing this phenomenon. In this work, amplitude threshold time-of-flight, resonance, and guided wave measurements are performed on wooden and aluminium rods. Using guided wave theory, it is shown through simulations and experimental results that dispersion causes an overestimation of time-of-flight measurements. This overestimation was able to be mitigated using dispersion compensation. However, other guided wave techniques could potentially be used to obtain improved measurements.Item All-Dielectric Transreflective Angle-Insensitive Near-Infrared (NIR) Filter(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2022-08) Shaukat A; Umer R; Noble F; Arif KThis paper presents an all-dielectric, cascaded, multilayered, thin-film filter, allowing near-infrared filtration for spectral imaging applications. The proposed design is comprised of only eight layers of amorphous silicon (A-Si) and silicon nitride (Si₃N₄), successively deposited on a glass substrate. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation results demonstrate a distinct peak in the near-infrared (NIR) region with transmission efficiency up to 70% and a full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 77 nm. The theoretical results are angle-insensitive up to 60⁰ and show polarization insensitivity in the transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes. The theoretical response, obtained with the help of spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), is in good agreement with the experimental result. Likewise, the experimental results for polarization insensitivity and angle invariance of the thin films are in unison with the theoretical results, having an angle invariance up to 50⁰.Item Acoustic Multi-Detection of Gliadin Using QCM Crystals Patterned with Controlled Sectors of TEM Grid and Annealed Nanoislands on Gold Electrode(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 20/04/2020) Casari Bariani G; Zhou L; Poggesi S; Mittapalli R; Manzano M; Ionescu RECeliac diseases are a group of gluten ingestion-correlated pathologies that are widespread and, in some cases, very dangerous for human health. The only effective treatment is the elimination of gluten from the diet throughout life. Nowadays, the food industries are very interested in cheap, easy-to-handle methods for detecting gluten in food, in order to provide their consumers with safe and high-quality food. Here, for the first time, the manufacture of controlled micropatterns of annealed gold nanoislands (AuNIs) on a single QCM crystal (QCM-color) and their biofunctionalization for the specific detection of traces of gliadin is reported. In addition, the modified quartz crystal with a TEM grid and 30 nm Au (Q-TEM grid crystal) is proposed as an acoustic sensitive biosensing platform for the rapid screening of the gliadin content in real food products.
