Item Communication accommodation theory in quantitative research: Toward a standardized operationalization of core constructs(Taylor and Francis Group on behalf of the National Communication Association, 2025-10-13) Fowler C; Gasiorek J; Giles HCommunication accommodation theory (CAT) has been an influential theory for 50 years. However, its core constructs have not been operationalized consistently in quantitative research. In this manuscript, we report on efforts to standardize and validate a multi-dimensional instrument to measure constructs of theoretical importance in CAT. In Study 1 (n = 416), we detail the process through which items drawn from previous research were collated and describe six factors confirmed through factor analysis of the “other-report” form of the instrument. In Study 2 (n = 398), we replicate the factor structure from Study 1 and demonstrate its construct validity. In Study 3 (n = 356), we show the instrument can also serve as a valid self-report measure.Item Promoting rhinoceros welfare during transit: veterinarians' perspectives on transportation practices(Medpharm Publications on behalf of the South African Veterinary Association, 2024-11-01) Macha ES; Meyer LCR; Leiberich M; Hofmeyr M; Hooijberg EHDespite translocation being a useful conservation strategy in rhinoceros management, morbidities and mortalities occurring during transportation pose a significant concern to rhinoceros managers, veterinarians, and scientists. The objectives of this study were to better understand the effects of transport on rhinoceros and to gain insights from veterinarians involved in rhinoceros translocations about current practices and potential interventions that could improve welfare. A weblink and QR code to an online questionnaire with a total of 46 questions in Google Forms was sent to veterinarians who had experience in African rhinoceros transportation, through personal emails and social network forums. Results demonstrated that despite dehydration and negative energy balance being reported as the major causes of morbidities and mortalities during transport and post-release, most veterinarians (30/35; 86%) involved in rhinoceros translocation did not offer water, parenteral fluids, or feed to transported animals, for logistical reasons and the knowledge or perception of rhinoceros' resistance to taking ad lib food and water during transport. However, 52% (15/29) and 41% (15/34) of participants suggested that parenteral fluids could be used as an intervention to mitigate dehydration and negative energy balance respectively. To reduce stress, 94% (33/35) of respondents suggested the use of tranquilisers and sedatives. This study is the first to systematically investigate and report on practices by veterinarians involved in rhinoceros translocations globally. The study highlights that further research is required to explore optimal and pragmatic techniques in the field to mitigate reported welfare challenges in rhinoceros during transport.Item Preferences in traits and management characteristics for dairy-beef animals from a survey of New Zealand farmers(Taylor and Francis Group on behalf of the Royal Society of New Zealand, 2025-05-19) Sneddon NW; Corner-Thomas RA; Kenyon PR; Brier DThere are three parties involved in the expansion of dairy-beef or beef-on-dairy within New Zealand, they are namely, beef breeders, dairy farmers and beef finishers. Within these three groups, there are different requirements for an animal within each those industries. In 2022, Beef + Lamb New Zealand conducted a survey to collect responses from 121 respondents across these 3 parties, to gauge farmer preferences. The survey contained questions relating to the management of young cattle from birth through to weaning or sale (depending on management practice), and then from weaning or purchase through to finishing. All farmers were asked what traits they selected for in bulls, and what they based purchasing decisions on. The results showed a series of trends, related to breed choice, price and perceived benefit to their farming system. Calves from dairy cattle that had some Jersey genetics were seen as a finishing risk and were less attractive to finishing operations. There appeared to be a disconnect between the preferences of dairy and beef finishing operations, with sire selection having opposite selection criteria. The results of this survey indicate that work needs to be taken to align the goals of both beef finishers and dairy farmers.Item ‘We don’t know nearly enough’: an online survey exploring perspectives of specialists who support children with brain-based visual impairments(Frontiers Media S.A., 2025-01-29) Jakubowski JS; May E; Findlay R; McDowell N; Simkin SK; Hamm LM; Chang MIntroduction: Children with brain-based visual impairments (some of whom have a diagnosis of Cerebral Visual Impairment, or ‘CVI’) represent a growing and underserved population within vision services. These children often have more complex needs than those with ocular visual impairments and benefit from specialist support from multiple disciplines. This study aimed to understand the perspectives of these specialists in terms of their goals, views on collaboration, and understanding of the term ‘CVI’. Methods: We invited a range of specialists who work with children with brain-based visual impairments, including educators, rehabilitation staff, clinicians, and family members, to complete an online survey between April 2023 and April 2024. Results: The analysis included 94 respondents: 51 educators, 30 rehabilitation staff, 7 clinicians, and 6 family members. Respondents shared common goals of connecting with the child (87/94, 93%) and fostering their learning and development (82/94, 93%). However, respondents also noted some specific and divergent goals, which can be at odds with each other. Professional staff frequently identified family members as the most valuable source of information about their child’s vision (36/88, 41%), though family members expressed feeling under-valued. Transdisciplinary clinics were highlighted as a helpful model to provide quality child-centered care. Of the 73 professional staff who reported being familiar with the term ‘CVI’ (73/88, 83%), most (61/73, 84%) thought it was underdiagnosed, but respondents had different perspectives on what a diagnosis meant. Only 73% of professionals familiar with CVI reported receiving formal training about it. Discussion: The varied goals and different perspectives on CVI create challenges to providing cohesive support for children with brain-based visual impairments. Increasing the availability of complementary formal training across disciplines and adopting transdisciplinary models of care are promising approaches to improve the quality of services.Item The home literacy environment of school-age autistic children with high support needs.(John Wiley and Sons, 2024-08-01) Westerveld MF; Malone SA; Clendon S; Bowen R; Hayley G; Paynter JBACKGROUND: As a group, autistic children with high support needs (with adaptive functioning in the range of an intellectual disability) are at risk of significant literacy difficulties. We investigated the parent-reported home literacy environment of this group of children. METHOD: Sixty-two parents of autistic children (4.5 to 18.25 years) attending an autism-specific school completed a home literacy survey reporting on their child's: (1) alphabet knowledge, (2) interest in reading, (3) activities/interactions around books, (4) reading ability, and (5) writing ability. RESULTS: We found significant positive correlations between parent-reported child interest in reading and literacy-related interactions and skills, but not with child age. Children using spoken words to communicate obtained significantly greater scores on four home-literacy subscales, but not on reading interest. CONCLUSIONS: A better understanding of the home literacy activities of autistic children with high-support needs is needed to inform educational practices aimed at promoting literacy development in this vulnerable population.Item Hot stuff in the bushes: Thermal imagers and the detection of burrows in vegetated sites(John Wiley and Sons, Ltd., 2021-06-16) Cox TE; Matthews R; Halverson G; Morris SThermal imaging technology is a developing field in wildlife management. Most thermal imaging work in wildlife science has been limited to larger ungulates and surface-dwelling mammals. Little work has been undertaken on the use of thermal imagers to detect fossorial animals and/or their burrows. Survey methods such as white-light spotlighting can fail to detect the presence of burrows (and therefore the animals within), particularly in areas where vegetation obscures burrows. Thermal imagers offer an opportunity to detect the radiant heat from these burrows, and therefore the presence of the animal, particularly in vegetated areas. Thermal imaging technology has become increasingly available through the provision of smaller, more cost-effective units. Their integration with drone technology provides opportunities for researchers and land managers to utilize this technology in their research/management practices.We investigated the ability of both consumer (AUD$65,000) mounted on drones to detect rabbit burrows (warrens) and entrances in the landscape as compared to visual assessment.Thermal imagery and visual inspection detected active rabbit warrens when vegetation was scarce. The presence of vegetation was a significant factor in detecting entrances (p < .001, α = 0.05). The consumer imager did not detect as many warren entrances as either the professional imager or visual inspection (p = .009, α = 0.05). Active warren entrances obscured by vegetation could not be accurately identified on exported imagery from the consumer imager and several false-positive detections occurred when reviewing this footage.We suggest that the exportable frame rate (Hz) was the key factor in image quality and subsequent false-positive detections. This feature should be considered when selecting imagers and suggest that a minimum export rate of 30 Hz is required. Thermal imagers are a useful additional tool to aid in identification of entrances for active warrens and professional imagers detected more warrens and entrances than either consumer imagers or visual inspection.Item Factors Associated with Medication Noncompliance in Dogs in New Zealand.(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2024-09-03) Odom TF; Riley CB; Benschop J; Hill KE; Paterson MClient compliance with prescribed medication instructions to treat their pets is a concern. This study describes factors associated with the noncompliance of dog owners with veterinary recommendations for medication, as well as client-reported barriers and aids to administering medications. A cross-sectional survey of dog owners' compliance with veterinary medication recommendations was performed from 9 January 2019 to 18 July 2020. A convenience sample of owners who prescribed medication for their dogs during or following elective veterinary examination was surveyed regarding medication administration experience and compliance. Owners were followed up to determine if the course of medication had been completed. Compliance data were analyzed descriptively. Logistic regression was performed with compliance as the outcome. Medication noncompliance was recorded for 47% (71/151) of owners. Increasing dog age was associated with better owner compliance (p < 0.05). Pet owners who used "nothing" as an aid to medicating were less likely to be noncompliant (p < 0.05). Forty-seven percent (71/151) of owners reported that "nobody" showed them how to administer the medication. One-third of dog owners (47/151) reported challenges in medicating their pets. The most common reason cited by clients reporting challenges was a resistant pet. Demonstration of medication administration techniques and discussion about available aids to medicating a pet may improve client compliance.Item Farm management and husbandry practices associated with spontaneous humeral fractures in New Zealand dairy heifers.(Taylor and Francis Group, 2024-02-04) Wehrle-Martinez A; Lawrence KE; Back PJ; Rogers CW; Dittmer KEAIMS: To use a farm-based survey to identify characteristics of the New Zealand dairy system associated with the risk of spontaneous humeral fracture in dairy heifers. METHODS: A questionnaire was designed and made available in print and online to collect information from dairy farmers and/or veterinarians, across New Zealand, about the management and nutrition of cows from birth to first lactation. Data were collected from July 2019 to March 2020 from farms that either had recorded (case farms) or not recorded (control farms) cases of humeral fractures in dairy heifers. RESULTS: A total of 68 completed questionnaires were returned, with 35 responses from case farms and 33 responses from control farms. Twenty-six responses (38%) were from the South Island (13 case farms and 13 control farms) and 38 responses (56%) were from the North Island (20 case farms and 18 control farms). For four questionnaires (6%) farm location was not given. Adjusting for the effect of age when calves accessed pasture, case farms had increased odds of having Holstein-Friesian Jersey crossbreed cows as the predominant breed (OR = 9.7; 95% CI = 3.1-36.0; p < 0.001). Adjusting for the effect of breed, allowing calves access to pasture a week later decreased the odds of being a case farm (OR = 0.68; 95% CI = 0.47-0.90; p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Cows being Holstein-Friesian Jersey crossbreed was identified as a possible risk factor associated with spontaneous humeral fracture in dairy heifers in New Zealand. Given the small sample size, the likely multifactorial aetiology for humeral fractures, and the non-randomised survey, this risk factor, and the possible association between age at turn out and herd production with humeral fractures, all require further investigation.Item Field epidemiology capacity of the national veterinary services of Lao PDR: An online survey.(Frontiers Media S.A., 2023-03-21) Subharat S; Meunsene D; Putthana V; Tiwari H; Firestone SM; Tavornpanich SINTRODUCTION: Capacity in veterinary epidemiology is critical to detect, respond and control infectious diseases. Laos veterinary service is limited by having only a small number of veterinarians who graduated from overseas. Animal science graduates support the majority of the Laos veterinary services. The veterinary program was established in 2009 at the National University of Laos. We aimed to understand the national veterinary epidemiology capacity and identify gaps and training needs. METHOD: A cross-sectional online study was conducted in 2021 targeting central (DLF), provincial (PAFO) and district (DAFO) government animal health officers and veterinary/animal science academics (n = 332). The questionnaire addressed skills, experiences and perceived training needs in outbreak investigation, disease surveillance, data management and analysis, epidemiological surveys, One Health, leadership and communication and biosecurity. A descriptive analysis was performed and associations between demographic factors and epidemiological skills were examined. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: In total, 205 respondents completed the questionnaire (61.8% response rate). Respondents reported low or no skills and experience in data management and analysis, epidemiological surveys and One Health. In contrast, higher but limited skills and experiences were reported in outbreak investigation, disease surveillance and biosecurity. Previous epidemiology training was primarily associated with stronger experiences in veterinary epidemiology competencies, followed by respondents that had completed a veterinary degree, highlighting the value of the currently available epidemiology training and veterinary-trained personnel in Lao PDR. This study could help inform the Laos government in its policy planning for field veterinary epidemiology capacity and future training.Item Owner-Reported Health Events in Australian Farm Working Dogs.(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2024-06-27) Pattison NA; Isaksen KE; Cogger N; Dorman DCWorking farm dogs are an integral part of livestock farming in Australia but, currently, no studies have investigated their overall health. This study aimed to identify the prevalent diseases and injuries among these dogs, offering a baseline dataset. A total of 125 farm dog owners were recruited at a public working dog event and interviewed about the health of their dogs in the preceding 12 months. Information was provided about 526 dogs. Most dogs were Kelpies, and not neutered. Nine percent of the dogs had been sold, 6% had died, and 1% had been retired. Of the 444 remaining dogs, 24% had a health event in the past 12 months, while 13% had a health event that affected their work. The injuries (11%) mostly involved the musculoskeletal system or skin, while the non-traumatic illnesses (13%) commonly included arthritis. Forty-five percent of the injured dogs and 26% of the ill ones received veterinary treatment. The results indicate similarities to previous studies into working farm dogs. Given their unique challenges, further research is needed to ensure optimal care for farm dogs in Australia
