Item The genetic parameters of racing success and longevity in the New Zealand Thoroughbred racing industry(Taylor and Francis Group on behalf of the Royal Society Te Apārangi, New Zealand, 2025-04-23) Chin YY; Sneddon NW; Gibson MJ; Legg KA; Gee EK; Rogers CW; Handcock RWithin the Thoroughbred industry, individual success can be measured with races and prize money won. At an industry level, there is a requirement for horses to be able to race from a young age and have a sustained injury-free career. Therefore, the variance components of such traits were investigated within ASReml for 26,920 New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorses. Age at first competitive high-speed event (trial or race start) had high heritability (h2= 0.52 ± 0.02), and an inverse genetic correlation with career earnings (−0.40 ± 0.05) and number of wins (−0.35 ± 0.06). Career earnings (h2 = 0.24 ± 0.02) had positive genetic and phenotypic correlations (0.59 ± 0.004) with career length, implying that racing success could be a useful selection proxy for career length. Horses that started earlier had longer career length (−0.21 ± 0.07,–0.18 ± 0.01). The low heritability of career length (0.11 ± 0.01) reflects considerable environmental influence on this trait, reinforcing the importance of early training and exercise in increasing career length. Therefore, the optimal strategy is a selection programme focusing on racing success, which improves commercial appeal and is genetically correlated with longevity. A training and racing programme that encourage an early competitive high-speed event would optimise the phenotypic development of the musculoskeletal system and reduce injury risk.Item Nicotine exacerbates exertional heat strain in trained men: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study.(American Physiological Society, 2024-08-16) Moyen NE; Barnes MJ; Perry BG; Fujii N; Amano T; Kondo N; Mundel TTo determine whether using nicotine exacerbates exertional heat strain through an increased metabolic heat production (Hprod) or decreased skin blood flow (SkBF), 10 nicotine-naïve trained males [37 ± 12 yr; peak oxygen consumption (V̇o2peak): 66 ± 10 mL·min−1·kg−1] completed four trials at 20°C and 30°C following overnight transdermal nicotine (7 mg·24 h−1) and placebo use in a crossover, double-blind design. They cycled for 60 min (55% V̇o2peak) followed by a time trial (∼75% V̇o2peak) during which measures of gastrointestinal (Tgi) and mean weighted skin (̅Tsk) temperatures, SkBF, Hprod, and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were made. The difference in ΔTgi between nicotine and placebo trials was greater during 30°C (0.4 ± 0.5°C) than 20°C (0.1 ± 0.7°C), with ̅Tsk higher during nicotine than placebo trials (0.5 ± 0.5°C, P = 0.02). SkBF became progressively lower during nicotine than placebo trials (P = 0.01) and progressively higher during 30°C than 20°C trials (P < 0.01); MAP increased from baseline (P < 0.01) and remained elevated in all trials. The difference in Hprod between 30°C and 20°C trials was lower during nicotine than placebo (P = 0.01) and became progressively higher during 30°C than 20°C trials with exercise duration (P = 0.03). Mean power output during the time trial was lower during 30°C than 20°C trials (24 ± 25 W, P = 0.02), and although no effect of nicotine was observed (P > 0.59), two participants (20%) were unable to complete their 30°C nicotine trials as one reached the ethical limit for Tgi (40.0°C), whereas the other withdrew due to “nausea and chills” (Tgi = 39.7°C). These results demonstrate that nicotine use increases thermal strain and risk of exertional heat exhaustion by reducing SkBF. NEW & NOTEWORTHY In naïve participants, acute nicotine use exerts a hyperthermic effect that increases the risk of heat exhaustion during exertional heat strain, which is driven by a blunted skin blood flow response. This has implications for 1) populations that face exertional heat strain and demonstrate high nicotine use (e.g., athletes and military, 25%–50%) and 2) study design whereby screening and exclusion for nicotine use or standardization of prior use (e.g., overnight abstinence) is encouraged.Item Does chronic oral contraceptive use detrimentally affect C-reactive protein or iron status for endurance-trained women?(Wiley Periodicals LLC on behalf of The Physiological Society and the American Physiological Society., 2023-07-24) Badenhorst CE; Govus AD; Mündel TPURPOSE: Chronic use of the oral contraceptive pill (OCP) is reported to increase C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in premenopausal females. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from two research studies in eumenorrheic (n = 8) and OCP (n = 8) female athletes. Basal CRP and iron parameters were included in the analysis. Sample collection occurred following a standardized exercise and nutritional control for 24 h. Eumenorrheic females were tested in the early-follicular and mid-luteal phases, and the OCP users were tested in quasi-follicular and quasi-luteal phases (both active pill periods). RESULTS: A main effect for group (p < 0.01) indicated that average CRP concentration was higher in OCP users compared with eumenorrheic females, regardless of the day of measurement within the cycle. Results demonstrate a degree of iron parameters moderation throughout the menstrual cycle that is influenced by basal CRP levels; however, no linear relationship with CRP, serum iron, and ferritin was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Basal CRP values were consistently higher in the OCP group despite participants being in a rested state. These results may indicate a potential risk of cardiovascular disease in prolonged users of the OCP when compared to eumenorrheic female athletes.Item Postexercise muscle glycogen synthesis with glucose, galactose, and combined galactose-glucose ingestion.(American Physiological Society, 2023-12-01) Podlogar T; Shad BJ; Seabright AP; Odell OJ; Lord SO; Civil R; Salgueiro RB; Shepherd EL; Lalor PF; Elhassan YS; Lai Y-C; Rowlands DS; Wallis GAIngested galactose can enhance postexercise liver glycogen repletion when combined with glucose but effects on muscle glycogen synthesis are unknown. In this double-blind randomized study participants [7 men and 2 women; V̇o2max: 51.1 (8.7) mL·kg-1·min-1] completed three trials of exhaustive cycling exercise followed by a 4-h recovery period, during which carbohydrates were ingested at the rate of 1.2 g·kg-1·h-1 comprising glucose (GLU), galactose (GAL) or galactose + glucose (GAL + GLU; 1:2 ratio). The increase in vastus lateralis skeletal-muscle glycogen concentration during recovery was higher with GLU relative to GAL + GLU [contrast: +50 mmol·(kg DM)-1; 95%CL 10, 89; P = 0.021] and GAL [+46 mmol·(kg DM)-1; 95%CL 8, 84; P = 0.024] with no difference between GAL + GLU and GAL [-3 mmol·(kg DM)-1; 95%CL -44, 37; P = 0.843]. Plasma glucose concentration in GLU was not significantly different vs. GAL + GLU (+ 0.41 mmol·L-1; 95%CL 0.13, 0.94) but was significantly lower than GAL (-0.75 mmol·L-1; 95%CL -1.34, -0.17) and also lower in GAL vs. GAL + GLU (-1.16 mmol·-1; 95%CL -1.80, -0.53). Plasma insulin was higher in GLU + GAL and GLU compared with GAL but not different between GLU + GAL and GLU. Plasma galactose concentration was higher in GAL compared with GLU (3.35 mmol·L-1; 95%CL 3.07, 3.63) and GAL + GLU (3.22 mmol·L-1; 95%CL 3.54, 2.90) with no difference between GLU + GAL (0.13 mmol·L-1; 95%CL -0.11, 0.37) and GLU. Compared with galactose or a galactose + glucose blend, glucose feeding was more effective in postexercise muscle glycogen synthesis. Comparable muscle glycogen synthesis was observed with galactose-glucose coingestion and exclusive galactose-only ingestion. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Postexercise galactose-glucose coingestion or exclusive galactose-only ingestion resulted in a lower rate of skeletal-muscle glycogen replenishment compared with exclusive glucose-only ingestion. Comparable muscle glycogen synthesis was observed with galactose-glucose coingestion and exclusive galactose-only ingestion.Item Locking down the Impact of New Zealand's COVID-19 Alert Level Changes on Pets.(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2021-03-10) Esam F; Forrest R; Waran N; Williams JM; Randle H; Marlin DThe influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on human-pet interactions within New Zealand, particularly during lockdown, was investigated via two national surveys. In Survey 1, pet owners (n = 686) responded during the final week of the five-week Alert Level 4 lockdown (highest level of restrictions-April 2020), and survey 2 involved 498 respondents during July 2020 whilst at Alert Level 1 (lowest level of restrictions). During the lockdown, 54.7% of owners felt that their pets' wellbeing was better than usual, while only 7.4% felt that it was worse. Most respondents (84.0%) could list at least one benefit of lockdown for their pets, and they noted pets were engaged with more play (61.7%) and exercise (49.7%) than pre-lockdown. Many respondents (40.3%) expressed that they were concerned about their pet's wellbeing after lockdown, with pets missing company/attention and separation anxiety being major themes. In Survey 2, 27.9% of respondents reported that they continued to engage in increased rates of play with their pets after lockdown, however, the higher levels of pet exercise were not maintained. Just over one-third (35.9%) of owners took steps to prepare their pets to transition out of lockdown. The results indicate that pets may have enjoyed improved welfare during lockdown due to the possibility of increased human-pet interaction. The steps taken by owners to prepare animals for a return to normal life may enhance pet wellbeing long-term if maintained.Item Evidence-Based Aerobic Exercise Training in Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease: Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2021) Słomko J; Zalewska M; Niemiro W; Kujawski S; Słupski M; Januszko-Giergielewicz B; Zawadka-Kunikowska M; Newton J; Hodges L; Kubica J; Zalewski PBackground: This meta-analysis evaluates the overall effect of the non-pharmacological intervention, aerobic exercise, upon serum liver enzymes levels, glucose metabolism and anthropometric measures amongst patients with metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). It also examines whether the effects on these outcomes are moderated by the aerobic training protocol when considered according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommended FITT (frequency, intensity, time, type) principles. Approach and Results: Fifteen randomized control trials were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with usual care, continuous and interval training showed significant efficacy in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level improvement (MD = −2.4, 95% CI: −4.34 to −0.46 p = 0.015, I2 = 9.1%). Interventions based on all types of aerobic exercise protocols showed significant improvement of intrahepatic triglycerides (MD = −4.0557, 95% CI: −5.3711 to −2.7403, p < 0.0001, I2 = 0%) and BMI (MD = −0.9774, 95% CI: −1.4086 to −0.5462, p < 0.0001, I2 = 0). Meta-regression analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between total intervention time and ALT level (for all aerobic protocols: 6.0056, se = 2.6896, z = 2.2329, p = 0.02; as well as for continuous and interval aerobic protocols: 5.5069, se = 2.7315, z = 2.016, p = 0.04). Conclusions: All types of aerobic exercise protocols are effective at improving intrahepatic triglycerides and lead to a reduction in body mass index. In addition, continuous and interval aerobic exercise may be more effective at improving ALT ≤12 weeks intervention time benefits the management of MAFLD.Item Relationship between Cardiopulmonary, Mitochondrial and Autonomic Nervous System Function Improvement after an Individualised Activity Programme upon Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2021-04) Kujawski S; Cossington J; Słomko J; Zawadka-Kunikowska M; Tafil-Klawe M; Klawe JJ; Buszko K; Jakovljevic DG; Kozakiewicz M; Morten KJ; Dawes H; Strong JWL; Murovska M; Van Oosterwijck J; Estevez-Lopez F; Newton JL; Hodges L; Zalewski P; On Behalf Of The European Network On Me/Cfs EuromeneBackground: The therapeutic effects of exercise from structured activity programmes have recently been questioned; as a result, this study examines the impact of an Individualised Activity Program (IAP) on the relationship with cardiovascular, mitochondrial and fatigue parameters. Methods: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients were assessed using Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire (CFQ), Fatigue Severity Score (FSS) and the Fatigue Impact Scale (FIS). VO2peak, VO2submax and heart rate (HR) were assessed using cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Mfn1 and Mfn2 levels in plasma were assessed. A Task Force Monitor was used to assess ANS functioning in supine rest and in response to the Head-Up Tilt Test (HUTT). Results: Thirty-four patients completed 16 weeks of the IAP. The CFQ, FSS and FIS scores decreased significantly along with a significant increase in Mfn1 and Mfn2 levels (p = 0.002 and p = 0.00005, respectively). The relationships between VO2 peak and Mfn1 increase in response to IAP (p = 0.03) and between VO2 at anaerobic threshold and ANS response to the HUTT (p = 0.03) were noted. Conclusions: It is concluded that IAP reduces fatigue and improves functional performance along with changes in autonomic and mitochondrial function. However, caution must be applied as exercise was not well tolerated by 51% of patients.Item Physiological Demands and Muscle Activity of Jockeys in Trial and Race Riding.(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2022-09) Legg K; Cochrane D; Gee E; Macdermid P; Rogers CPhysiological parameters and muscle activity of jockeys may affect their fall and injury risk, performance, and career longevity, as well as the performance and welfare of the horses they ride. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify the physiological demands, body displacement, and electromyographic (EMG) activity of twelve jockeys riding 52 trials and 16 professional races. The jockeys were instrumented with heart rate (HR) monitors, accelerometers, and integrated EMG clothing (recording eight muscle groups: quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteal, erector spinae/lower back, abdominal external obliques, abdominal, trapezial and pectoral) which recorded continuously whilst riding. During race day, jockeys rode an average of 5 ± 4 trials and 4 ± 2 races over 2–2.5 h. The trials represented lower intensity cardiovascular demand (~81% HRmax) and Training Impulse (TRIMP) scores (4.4 ± 1.8) than races at maximal intensity effort (~94% HRmax, 7.2 ± 1.8 TRIMP, p < 0.05). Jockey head displacement was similar in trials (5.4 ± 2.1 cm) and races (5.6 ± 2.2 cm, p > 0.05), with more vertical (6.7 ± 2.7 cm) and less medio/lateral (2.3 ± 0.7 cm) and fore/aft (3.7 ± 1.6 cm) displacement for jockeys riding in trials than races (5.5 ± 2.3, 2.8 ± 1.0, 5.6 ± 2.5 cm, p < 0.05). Jockeys in races adopted a lower crouched posture, with their centre of mass (COM) shifted anteriorly, using greater hamstring activation and less upper arm muscle activation than in trials. The differences in riding posture and physiological demands on jockeys riding in a race rather than a trial, highlight the requirement for an off-horse race-specific training programme to improve jockey fitness and performance. Greater jockey stability and coordination will have mutual benefits for both horse welfare and performance.Item Replacing Sedentary Time with Physically Active Behaviour Predicts Improved Body Composition and Metabolic Health Outcomes(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2022-07) O'Brien WJ; Rauff EL; Shultz SP; Sloughter M; Fink PW; Breier B; Kruger RBackground: Discretionary leisure time for health-promoting physical activity (PA) is limited. This study aimed to predict body composition and metabolic health marker changes from PA reallocation using isotemporal substitution analysis. Methods: Healthy New Zealand women (n = 175; 16–45 y) with high BMI (≥25 kg/m2) and high body fat percentage (≥30%) were divided into three groups by ethnicity (Māori n = 37, Pacific n = 54, and New Zealand European n = 84). PA, fat mass, lean mass, and metabolic health were assessed. Isotemporal substitution paradigms reallocated 30 min/day of sedentary behaviour to varying PA intensities. Results: Reallocating sedentary behaviour with moderate intensity, PA predicted Māori women would have improved body fat% (14.83%), android fat% (10.74%), and insulin levels (55.27%) while the model predicted Pacific women would have improved waist-to-hip (6.40%) and android-to-gynoid (19.48%) ratios. Replacing sedentary time with moderate-vigorous PA predicted Māori women to have improved BMI (15.33%), waist circumference (9.98%), body fat% (16.16%), android fat% (12.54%), gynoid fat% (10.04%), insulin (55.58%), and leptin (43.86%) levels; for Pacific women, improvement of waist-to-hip-ratio (5.30%) was predicted. Conclusions: Sedentary behaviour must be substituted with PA of at least moderate intensity to reap benefits. Māori women received the greatest benefits when reallocating PA. PA recommendations to improve health should reflect the needs and current activity levels of specific populations.Item Physical Activity, Mental Health and Wellbeing during the First COVID-19 Containment in New Zealand: A Cross-Sectional Study(MDPI (Basel, Switzerland), 2021-11) O'Brien WJ; Badenhorst CE; Draper N; Basu A; Elliot CA; Hamlin MJ; Batten J; Lambrick D; Faulkner JStrategies implemented worldwide to contain COVID-19 outbreaks varied in severity across different countries, and established a new normal for work and school life (i.e., from home) for many people, reducing opportunities for physical activity. Positive relationships of physical activity with both mental and physical health are well recognised, and therefore the aim was to ascertain how New Zealand’s lockdown restrictions impacted physical activity, mental health and wellbeing. Participants (n = 4007; mean ± SD: age 46.5 ± 14.7 years, 72% female, 80.7% New Zealand European) completed (10–26 April 2020) an online amalgamated survey (Qualtrics): International Physical Activity Questionnaire: Short Form; Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-9; World Health Organisation-Five Well-Being Index; Stages of Change Scale. Positive dose–response relationships between physical activity levels and wellbeing scores were demonstrated for estimates that were unadjusted (moderate activity OR 3.79, CI 2.88–4.92; high activity OR 8.04, CI 6.07–10.7) and adjusted (confounding variables: age, gender, socioeconomic status, time sitting and co-morbidities) (moderate activity 1.57, CI 1.11–2.52; high activity 2.85, CI 1.97–4.14). The study results support previous research demonstrating beneficial effects of regular physical activity on mental health and wellbeing. Governments may use these results to promote meeting physical activity guidelines in order to protect mental health and wellbeing during the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and future pandemics.
