Abstract

‘Zes008’ (Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis) is a recently developed kiwifruit cultivar in New Zealand, notable for its red flesh colour and high sweetness. However, its rapid ripening and short storage life in the regular cool chain create challenges for export and supply chain management. To extend the storage life of ‘Zes008’, multiple controlled and modified atmosphere technologies with reduced oxygen (O2) and elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) were evaluated in this study. A range of controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions were tested over 8 weeks of cool storage and subsequent shelf life. An optimal CA condition for maintaining the firmness of ‘Zes008’ was identified. However, CA would be challenging to achieve under sea freight conditions. In addition, rapid softening during retail display conditions also represented a risk of resulting in a poor consumer experience.--Shortened abstract
